For at least a little while, pieces of Final Four history were for sale on Ebay. A couple of George Mason University Final Four rings were to be auctioned off, until the auctions were inexplicably shut down. Apparently, the rings may have belonged to Maurice Sherrens, who is the Senior VP at the school. The GMU Patriots were one of the biggest Cinderella stories in college basketball history, reaching the Final Four as an 11th seed in 2006. So although the rings might not have too much actual value, the sentimental value would theoretically be astronomical to those who were a part of it.
It hasn't yet been determined exactly why the Scherrens got rid of the rings. He made $260,000 last year, so unless he has a gambling problem or something that we don't know about, he shouldn't need the few bucks that the pawn shop would have given him. And he's a football referee on the weekends at various levels, so it's not like he isn't a sports fan. Stuff like this just comes off as embarrassing to the school, and it seems like it should be avoided, if at all possible.
How much would you pay for a piece of history like this? The opening bid was supposed to be $20, before they were taken down. I'm thinking I'd pay a little more than that, though, for these bad boys:
