I don't think his defense was any different than that played by Rivers on the previous possession. He was just defending him, and then let him go. Odd.
It was a phantom foul, by any standard, I mean its like holding in football you could call a foul every time someone takes it to the hole, plus Rivers fouled the Nova player so he should have let it go both ways
Personally, I think the only way you call that is if the ref wanted to send a message as to what type of game he wanted to see at the begining of the game. Otherwise that should never be called, let alone with less than second in the game.
thats the difference between what you call a smart player and a not so smart player, some guys can just always no whats going on, while others just react, remember Chris Webber calling a timeout, in NCAA championship when they didn't have any, can you imagine how many times his coaches told them they had no timeouts.
