The New York Giants announced the release of two of their starters – half back Ahmad Bradshaw and defensive tackle Chris Canty on Wednesday.

The moves come a day after the New York Giants released linebacker Michael Boley. All three veterans were released by the team to create some cap space while revamping the roster after the New York Giants finished 9-5 and out of the playoffs picture following last year’s run. Michael Boley, Ahmad Bradshaw and Chris Cant were all members of the New York Giants team that defeated the Philadelphia Eagles for the Super Bowl XLVI victory, the franchise’s fourth Championship title.

The New York Giants’ cap space was set at $121.1 million, which would make them $4.7 million over the salary cap for 2013. Ahmad Bradshaw, who had two years remaining on his contract, was set to make $4.25 million next season. Chris Canty was expected to earn $6.5 million next season while Michael Boley would have been owed $4.25 million in base salary for 2013. By releasing Ahmad Bradshaw, Chris Canty and Michael Boley, the New York Giants saved $13.75 million in cap space.

The freed cap space is expected to be used by the New York Giants for signing their own free agents such as left tackle Will Beatty as well as restricted free agents such as Andre Brown, Stevie Brown and Victor Cruz.

While the three released players demanded big salaries that imposed salary cap restrictions on the New York Giants, the moves could be more than just for financial concerns.

Although Ahmad Bradshaw has been the New York Giants’ leading rusher over the last three seasons, the 26-year old has struggled with multiple foot and ankle injuries for several years. The six-year pro Ahmad Bradshaw underwent right foot surgery two weeks ago and could be out for more than two months.  Ahmad Bradshaw had 1,015 yards and six touchdowns on 221 rushes, while averaging 4.6 yards per carry in 14 games last season.

The team’s 2012 draft, first-round pick David Wilson has gained increasing confidence of both New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese and coach Tom Coughlin, who see Wilson replacing Ahmad Bradshaw upon his departure. David Wilson finished with 358 yards and four touchdowns last season. Tom Coughlin could play out multiple combos at back, such as the tandem of David Wilson with third-year pro Andre Brown. The North Carolina State alum Andre Brown rushed for 385 yards and eight touchdowns before fracturing his leg.

Coming back from offseason knee surgery, Chris Canty played just nine games after starting off the season on the New York Giants physically unable to perform list. Chris Canty sprained his MCL in the Week 16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens and was inactive for the New York Giants during Week 17.The 30-year-old Chris Canty finished with 20 tackles and three sacks in 2013.

Meanwhile, Michael Boley struggled with hamstring and shoulder issues throughout the season. Michael Boley posted 92 combined tackles, ½ sacks, 4 passes defended and eight stuff yards in his 2013 campaign.

Earlier, the New York Giants also released defensive tackle Martin Parker, who ended the season on the injured reserve.
