Just 5 years removed from their lowest point in school history, the Baylor Bears men's basketball team is playing it's biggest game in program history tonight at Texas A&M. Saturday night Baylor snapped a 25-game conference road losing streak, beating Nebraska 72-70 and as a result earned a 25th ranking, it's first since 1969. The Bears are now 15-2 (3-0) in conference play. This normally wouldn't be all the noteworthy. A lot of schools who've struggled in hoops spike up for a good season here and there, but not many have had to go through what BU did in the summer of 2003.
In short, Carlton Dotson murdered fellow teammate Patrick Dennehy. Then degenerate coach Dave Bliss tried to cover up the murder and improper benefits by asking an assistant coach to portray Dennehy as a drug deal. There's a little more to the story you can follow here, but all in all that should cover the dark, dark story in a nutshell.
Baylor was left with a few players, many NCAA violations and a very unattractive head coach opening. Insert Scott Drew (yes, older brother of this guy) who decided to take on the challenging of rebuilding an entire program and athletic community.
Halfway through his 5th season, I'd say Drew is doing a fairly remarkable job. The Bears have some solid wins -- Notre Dame, Winthrop, Oklahoma Sate and Nebraska, while their two losses are acceptable to Washington State and Arkansas.
Are they legit? We'll find out tonight.
If you're looking for a big, big underdog to root for the remainder of the seaosn, hoping on the Baylor bandwagon would be a good start. A win over the ranked Aggies might return some bliss back to the program.
