In the first major trade of the preseason, the Phoenix Suns have traded Marcin Gortat for former Washington Wizards center Emeka Okafor. This a great trade for the aspirational Wizards who were thin in their front court with Okafor’s return indefinite and Nene’s minutes being monitored. Furthermore, this allows Nene to move to the power forward position, while Gortat plays center.

Gortat tweeted, “I knew its gonna happen so I’m glad it happened now not in mid season.! It’s still hard to leave such a great city. I wanna say i dont have any hard feelings towards Suns front office people. Ryan is an amazing GM. He put them back on the right track.”

For the Suns, this trade means that they are trying to acquire assets for their future. Along with Okafor, the Suns receive a protected 2014 first-round pick that is up to the 12th pick. The Suns will now have a whopping four first-round picks for the 2014 draft; a draft class that looks to be loaded with talent. This isn't a terrible move for the Suns either, since they had absolutely no chance of winning the NBA Finals and a marginal chance of making the playoffs. So, the time to rebuild is now and the 2014 draft is the one to do it in.
