Greatest Individual Athlete Tournament: And the winner is...
READ MORE:
After a whopping 271 votes and over 200 comments, FanIQ has decided that the greatest athlete from an individual sport is Jim Thorpe. Thorpe could do just about anything, and that proved to be the difference. Thorpe earned 59% of the vote against Muhammad Ali.

I would like to thank everyone for their participation throughout the tournament. Let me know: Would this work as an annual event, and if so, what would you change about it?

Again, thanks to everyone who participated, congrats to our winner, and someone cue "One Shining Moment."

FanIQ's choice makes sense to me.

Thanks for running this gearhead.  My hope is that we can soon use our brackets for these kind of events...

This was fun Gearhead.  Maybe next time we should not include Thorpe, and see who "number 2" would be.  Then when we have a couple finished, we could have a winner's tourney.

I think a better idea would be to one of these tournaments, except with the best teams of all time from a certain sport.  "Greatest NFL team tournament" or with other sports.

Ali would win.  Then Thorpe would again beat Ali.

The ball is tipped
and there you are
you're running for your life
you're a shooting star
And all the years
no one knows
just how hard you worked
but now it shows...
(in) ONE SHINING MOMENT, IT'S ALL ON THE LINE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, THERE FROZEN IN TIME

But time is short
and the road is long
in the blinking of an eye
ah that moment's gone
And when it's done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew...
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED DEEP INSIDE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW YOU WERE ALIVE

Feel the beat of your heart
feel the wind in your face
it's more than a contest
it's more than a race...

And when it's done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew...
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED FOR THE SKY
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU WERE WILLING TO TRY
ONE SHINING MOMENT....

If I do another tournament, it'll be of just auto racers. That will be a few months off thought (I have to prepare myself mentally for an all-NASCAR final eight). If I do this again, I'll be expanding the field to 96 and seeding it like a tennis tournament.

Pretty much. That's why I'm not sure doing this again next year is a good idea.

I think we should try to keep the matchups with players from the same eras. The problem with the Ali-Thorpe matchup is that Thorpe died before most of us were even born and far too many people didn't even know who he was. It did make for some interesting debate though but it was unfair in the fact that none of us have ever even seen footage of Thorpe compete while all of us have seen footage of Ali and most likely saw the movie about him as well. Times are drastically different now from Thorpe's era, in his day sports were more of a hobby, in Ali's day sport had already become big business. I wonder why there hasn't been any movie's made about the life of Jim Thorpe, that would be a good topic for Hollywood to jump on.
