Is Greg Biffle en route to becoming another Kurt Busch in the sense of winning a championship in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series? Busch is the last person who won the championship and wasn't among the top contenders all season. Check out some similarities between Busch and The Biff...-Greg Biffle meandered his way through the 2008 regular season without a win and began the Chase in 9th position, and was 596 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson after Fontana, 6th in points.
-Kurt Busch had 2 wins in the 2004 regular season, the first year of the Chase, but started the Chase in 7th position, and was 296 points behind leader Jimmie Johnson after Fontana, 7th in points.
-Greg Biffle has won the first 2 races of the 2008 Chase for the Cup, has gained 7 positions, and finds himself just 10 points behind leader Carl Edwards in a tie for 2nd with Jimmie Johnson who holds the tiebreaker.
-Kurt Busch won the first race of the 2004 Chase for the Cup, gained 5 positions, and found himself in a tie for the points lead with Dale Earnhardt Jr. who held the tiebreaker.
-Greg Biffle now has 2 victories.
-Kurt Busch had 3 wins in 2004.
-Greg Biffle has 10 top 5s and 13 top 10s
-Kurt Busch at this point in 2004 had less top 5s (6 of them), but 14 top 10s.
Much like his former teammate Kurt Busch in 2004, Greg Biffle was fairly consistent in the regular season, but was never in the championship picture. That all changed at Loudon, when Biffle earned his first victory of the season, and suddenly vaulted to the top. As if that wasn't enough, he did it again in Dover last Sunday. All throughout 2004 regular season there was talk of the top contenders like Gordon, Johnson, Stewart, and Earnhardt Jr. This year, the regular season was all about Busch, Edwards, Johnson, Burton, and Earnhardt Jr. who were (like the guys back in 2004) at the top of the standings for 95% of the regular season.
Could Greg Biffle pull off the upset and win this title? Can he be Appalachain State to Edwards and Johnson? Let's be perfectly honest, he and his crew shot themselves in the foot several times in the first 26 races of 2008 when Biffle had a car capable of winning, whether it be pit road mishaps, Biffle disregarding the speed limit on pit road, or just using his stuff up too early in the race. He's lost races more ways this year than Dale Earnhardt lost the Daytona 500 for 19 years.
For me, I've never been a huge fan of Biffle, but one thing I always did want to see was him holding the championship trophy, and here's why. I'm a huge fan of witnessing history in the making in NASCAR, and I know I'm not alone in that. Biffle is attempting to do something that nobody has ever done in the history of NASCAR. Bobby Labonte is the only driver to ever win both a Busch Series and a Winston Cup Series Championship. Greg Biffle is the only driver to win both a Craftsman Truck Series and a Busch Series Championship. Should he win this 2008 Sprint Cup title, he would become the first driver to win a championship in ALL THREE of NASCAR's top divisions.
What I'd like to see happen for history's sake and what I think will happen are 2 different outcomes. While I'd like to witness history in the world of stock car racing, I stand by my prediction from my Chase Driver Spotlight on Biffle, in which I thought he would not win the championship this year. I do think it will happen soon, but 2008 is not the year for The Biff. That's not to say he won't keep things exciting over the final 8 races, but he'll fall just short. I knew he'd win sooner or later, but I didn't expect to see him at the top this fast!
Until next time, I'm your NASCAR VP saying I don't know much about history, but I do know The Biff is making a bid for all 3 (championships that is)!
BK over and out
