Greg Schiano Chats With Michigan, Will Stay at Rutgers Until JoePa Leaves
Forgive me if I seem a little too obsessed with these coaching searches, but I find them a fascinating study in rumormongering and fandom. Last night Michigan message boards were atwitter with news Wolverines AD Bill Martin took a break of sailing to "interview" Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano.

Getting Schiano to Ann Arbor would have been an incredible coup, but it appears that won't be the case according to ESPN's Pat Forde. Of course, taking an ESPN source as the end all be all can get you in trouble.

What I find funny, and likely fuels fan craziness, is that all the Detroit papers are writing about Greg Schiano this morning and the offer that will come today. The general attitude is why wouldn't he come to Michigan. Way to set your fans up for meltdown ... and that they are.

Sciano has long been rumored to be waiting for the Penn State job to open up, one he will almost assuredly be offered wherever that is Joe Paterno hangs 'em up.

So where does Michigan go now -- you'll never guess who the newest name floated in the Michigan coaching search? Sean Payton ... that's right, New Orleans Saints coach.

It doesn't surprise me that UM is looking to the NFL, but I don't think Sean Payton will come to Ann Arbor. His job is safe.  Although he would be a great hire. I would think Michigan would target coaches who, if they don't turn things around next year could be fired after the 08 season. Coaches like Petrino, Marvin Lewis, Nolan out in SF all come to mind. I also wouldnt mind going after Jason Garrett, the OC in Dallas. He seems to have a bright future.

Sean Payton?  Call me crazy, but Michigan can do much better.  Like Tron, I like Jason Garett a ton.  He knows how to call a game, but I'd leave him in the NFL.

I know it isn't a splashy hire, but they should at this point promote from within and go with Ron English.  Miami did the same thing last year, and even though the results didn't show this year, I truly believe it will pay off.

Also, who does Lloyd Carr want to replace him?  His opinion shouldn't matter all that much, but I think they should at the very least ask him who he thinks would be a good replacement.  They may have asked him that already, but usually that kind of thing leaks out through the media.

Just for fun I decided to pull up some Detroit sports talk ... and guess who they think might still end up at Michigan? Les Miles. Hilarious.

I don't understand why everyone is so upset about Miles. I mean, he's a solid coach, but it's not like when Iowa turned down Bob Stoops. He was a good fit because of the Michigan connection, but there are better coaches out there. I am pretty sure that Martin was never really interested in Miles and is looking to the NFL for the Pete Carroll type guy. Lots of NFL experience, great personality. If they good somehow get Del Rio away from Jacksonville it would be a steal. (Another reason that Carr should have retired last year.  Del Rio was kind of on the hot seat.)

I am MORE irked by the fact that they won't even look Brian Kelly's way...way more than I am about Les Miles. Les Miles' name will be circling in the wind in 4 years about the U of M job (yes, again) when Bill Martin makes this particular mistake:

Hiring Ron English & keeping DeBord, Loeffler & co.

These bumbling idiots, who are descendants of the chief bumbling idiot who ran this program smack dab into the throws of mediocrity, will unfortunately keep us there until we wake up & realize that Martin was great at marketing, but sucks at running an Athletic Department...and fires him like the last bumbling idiot (sense a theme here?) that ran the AD....Tom Goss. Remember that buffoon??

IMO...we should hire Kelly & enjoy some football that's similar to what our opponents play & run all over the field with...

Football that doesn't bring memories of age old sayings like "3 yards & a cloud of dust..."

You know?? Modern football....
