Video: Hank Aaron Congratulatory Statement to Barry Bonds

Despite your thoughts on Barry Bonds achievement tonight, I think we can all agree that the class act of the night was Henry (Hank) Aaron. Perhaps he hadn't handled himself well in the past, but tonight he did his duty. I was ok with his official "non-statement," but he offered a more appropriate congratulations to Barry Bonds than I think any of us could have written up:

"From the desk of Henry Aaron:

I would like to offer my congratulations to Barry Bonds on becoming baseball's career home run leader. It is a great accomplishment which required skill, longevity and determination.

Throughout the past century, the home run has held a special place in baseball, and I have been privileged to hold this record for 33 of those years. I move over now and offer my best wishes to Barry and his family on this historic achievement.

My hope today, as it was on that April evening in 1974, is that the achievement of this record will inspire others to chase their own dreams."

I'd of course like to encourage others to chase their dreams ... naturally, because you CAN achieve it by those means, but either way, a very appropriate remark from a man who didn't just stand and admire his record home run with two hands above his head and that's how I'll distinguish these two sluggers.

I just want to say that I was there tonight.  It was awesome!  Surreal.  Amazing.  It was great to hear from Aaron.  Especially after all that he siad, or had been attributed to him saying.  Up to this point, I didn't think Aaron was handling the whole thing very well at all.  After his video message that was played at the park, all is forgiven.

What kind of a record-breaking home run is it if you don't have Craig Sager and guys in bell-bottoms running along with you?

Now, I might have applauded his home run had Erin Andrews been running along side Barry

Yeah that's the one vision we allhave of Homerun Hammerin Hank Aaron is him strolling causually around the bases an some madman running on the field in Bell Botttoms trying to maul him as he's rouding thrid heading home. With Barry all we have is hands raised high and a cloud over head. It's a same because as we have finally gotten to this point it's bittersweet and it shouldn't be. This should be a celebration to the highest degree. The greatest record in sports history has been borken. And America barely blinked. The city of Cooperstown should be closed off and the new Homerun king should be sitting there writing his acceptance speech for induction to the HOF. For those in San Fran you've had an experience most will never feel. Enjoy it. You the fans deserve it. For baseball I think it's time we move on.

Don't know how you could say this.  It wasn't bittersweet at all.  ALL of MLB celebrated this.  America noticed.  But the problem was that it happened at 11:40PM on the east coast.  When all but the most die hard fans are fast asleep.

The only negative thing about this whole affair are the wet blankets who get off on raining on one of the precious few genuinely great moments MLB has served up over the recent years.

By bittersweet I mean that all of baseball should have stopeed and applauded what was accomplished but this is clearly not the case. Many players are so non-chalant about the record with a whoop dee doo attitude instead of understanding what a great feat it was. I agree with you that this is one of those moments that should be passed down from generation to gerenation like the stories of Dimaggio, ted williams and the like. But it wont. It wont have nearly the impact on the game it should. I agree it should be celebrated and nothing else should be considered sports news today, but is it. No. we've waited since last year knowing this would happen and the biggest story leading up to the event was whether or not the commish would be there. That's absolutely ridiculous and shame on all those involved in baseball who allowe for it to get this far. We've gotten so wrapped up in the issues around baseball that we are mssing the stories in baseball. If i didn't hear the word steriod again it would be too soon. I aplaud barry for his longetivuty, his persisitence to excel, and to the years he's gone out there and played the game to the best of his abilities. And I hope to see him in Cooperstown on the first ballot, I just don't hold out hope anymore.

Time will tell.  20 years from now, it will be looked back on as a great baseball moment.  I promise you that.

The only people who aren't feeling great about this are the crybabies and wet blankets who don't want anyone to enjoy anything.

You couldn't just leave it alone, could you, Jason?  Funny, I didn't see ANY reference to NATURALLY.. anywhere in that video--You're running a close second to Pat in the "Bonds hater" category, and now that the record is done, you can both go hang out with Rory and Danica!!

Give me one good reason to like Barry. I've yet to hear one.

Nothing would change your mind, so why bother?  I'm not Bonds' biggest fan, but the whole moment could have been left alone, without any commentary.

Go read San Francisco newspapers if you want to see a glorified, cheesy take.

No one is asking anyone to like Barry.  I've never met the guy and he comes across as a first class jerk to me.

But that does not change that he is the best all round player of his generation.  And his hitting skills are amazing.

I admire and respect his baseball ability.  Not his personality.

Not entirely true.  The fans seem to be into this far more than the media is.  There was even a front page article in this mornings Mercury News by Ann Killion.  A noted wet blanket regarding this whole thing.  If you ask me, such an article was not the one to put on the front page, but rather inside the sports section.

You won't change Jason's(or Pat's) mind on this--you're just shouting into the wind.

Hank's statement to Barry was a VERY good one and just shows that the man is a class act. I know that the statement meant everything to Barry because he was pretty upset that Hank stated that he wouldn't be in SF to witness it. I don't exactly like Barry but I was glad to see him do it last night (and get it over with). It was fun to watch and to witness history (atleast until A-Rod comes along and breaks this record. lol).

BTW, did anyone get to watch the interview with the guy who caught the ball? Did he happen to say what he was going to do with it? Curious what kind of offers he has gotten so far!

Funny thing about the guy who cought it.  He was from New York and was killing time on a long stopover in SF.  I was wondering if he got on his flight to Australia that night...

Yeah I saw that last night (I was watching the game and laughing when I saw that a Mets fan caught it). Talk about luck with buying a ticket on a whim on your way out of the country. I just wondered if he told the media what he was doing with the ball. He said he was only going to do one interview after the game and that's it. I'm assuming that they asked him what he was going to do with the ball. Bonds says that he doesn't want the ball (which I find hard to believe). So it seems that this guy won't be selling it to Bonds.

Bonds SAYS a lot of stuff that can be blown off.  But I get the impression that he really doesn't care about the ball that much.  He has said for years that anyone who gives him the ball back would be stupid because of what it could fetch on the market.

It's a blog. Blogs ARE commentary. This isn't being passed off as "News" anyway. If you disagree, then write your own blog, or post the news story yourself, minus the commentary.

And thanks for bringing my name up twice before I even had a chance to look at the thread. But please realize, I am more than willing to listen to reasonable arguments and discussions about why Bonds should be liked or respected. But like CF said (and you promptly dismissed), there really isn't a good reason to LIKE Bonds. And if there are, I can give you 5 reasons to hate him.

Some people aren't just hateful for no reason. Lots of us have a reason for feeling a certain way about things. I'm sure you have a reason for being a Bonds apologist, but you haven't really stated one yet, so I'm not sure what it is. As for my beliefs, everyone should know by now how I feel, and why.
