This is just a reminder to everyone out there who still insists that Gretzky or Lemiuex are the greatest NHL players ever, but with all due respect to these guys let me just remind you people out there about the best ever, Robert Gordon Orr who just happend to turn 60 Thursday, I am going to just start with his career from the begining and move on by the years, first of he was drafted when he was 12 years old, but had to wait til he turned 18 and whenthat happend as an 18 year old he only had 13 goals for 41pts with a plus 30 as an 18 year old rookie defenseman, on one of the worst teams in the NHL. Orr revolutionized the game by posting unprecedented offensive numbers all while being the best defensive defensman in the game, He had 2 SCORING TITLES @ 6 consecutive 100pt seasons thats right six all firsts by a defenseman & still never done by any defenseman. He won 8 consecutive NORRIS TROPHYS that is just insane. He was the First defenseman ( you noticing all the firsts & onlys) to win playoff MVP with 21pts in 14 games in 69-70. He had 139 pts in 70-71 season winning the second of his 3 STRAIGHT HARTS ( league MVP) first & only defenseman. HE is still the only player everto win the HART, NORRIS, ROSS, & SMYTHE in same season are you dizzy yet. He was the first million dollar player in NHL, when he signed a 5 year 200.000 contract. He won a 2nd Conn Smythe in 71-72 in leading Bruins to their 2nd cup also the first defenseman to win 2 Smythes. In 74-75 he scored 46 goals yes 46 goals that is still an NHL record for defenseman no other defenseman has or ever will come close to that and that despite playing on knees made out of jelly as he had several operations. Finally at the age of 31 he had to call it quits as his knees just could not take it anymore, he retired with 270 goals & 645 assists for 953 pts can you imagine what his numbers would have been even though his official retirment was at age 31, he really retired at the age of 28 as his last 3 years he played very little because of his knees, not only did Orr accomplish these numbers, but remember ever teams gameplan in the NHL was centererd to stop him, teams took more cheap shots at Orr than Gretzky or Lemiuex ever even sniffed, and Orr droped the gloves when he had to which was frequently early in his career . His mandatory 3 year waiting period was waived as Orr became the youngest player ever inducted into the NHL hall of fame in 1979. So once again I would just like to wish HAPPY 60th BOBBY ORR
GREAT post! I have said for a long time that while Gretzky and Lemieux were great great hockey players, people like Orr fall through the cracks of recognition. Thanks for this!
Happy Birthday, Bobby!
And I forgot to mention - Orr's always been one of my favorites. I know Gretzky broke and still holds most records out there, but Orr and Howe, and guys like that revolutionized the game. Simply amazing players who don't get the props they deserve.

He owns every single season record for a defenseman and the only reason he does not have career is he did not play long enough.
Thanks Murph It amazes me how the NHL does not reconize, his accomplishments more often
He wasn't all about flash. He just played. Thats not marketable these days. If a guy isn't mugging for the cameras the perception is he doesn't have a personality. It is a true shame.

Yea but I never realized the numbers & awards he won he totally dominated the NHL for 8 solid years and if they had the medical marvels then that they have now, his numbers would have been sick, do you realize he had to quit at the age of 27, he didn't retire till he was 31, but realistically for 3 years he just kept trying for a miracle that would let him lace em up again

Would you agree that to truly appreciate the things he was able to do on the ice you either had to see him play live or have played the game? I can't even fathom the unique talents Bobby Orr possessed. I could relate more to a Ken Daneyko-type player personally, which isn't so bad either.
