June Jones is letting wins over bottom rung teams get to his head. Last night on ESPN's College Football Bowl Show he dissed Tim Tebow as the system quarterback, not Colt Brennan.
First of all, this whole term "system quarterback" is a little silly. Every coach has a system and every team recruits quarterbacks to best fit that system. So essentially everyone is a system QB, but the notion that Tim Tebow is more of a system quarterback than Colt Brennan seems silly.
Let's look at the offensive output of the quarterback in June Jones system the last 6 years:
2007: 424 for 606 / 5,402 yards / 50 TD : 19 INT / 135 rush yds, 11 TD 2006: 444 for 559 / 5, 549 yards / 58 TD: 12 INT / 396 rush yds, 6 TD 2005: 379 for 574 / 4,611 yards / 37 TD : 15 INT / 212 rush yds, 1 TD 2004: 370 for 634 / 4,402 yards / 38 TD : 18 INT / 122 rush yds, 2 TD 2003: 444 for 754 / 5,382 yards / 42 TD : 27 INT / 69 rush yds, 2 TD 2002: 407 for 731 / 5,406 yards / 35 TD : 26 INT / 221 rush yds, 2 TD
Here's what we know about Hawaii: they have their system that's different than most others ... pass as much as possible. Colt Brennan is a better quarterback than Timmy Change and Hawaii's defense has, if you can believe it, actually improved over the years hence the crazy TD improvement.
Now, Urban Meyer ...
2007: 222 for 327 / 3,172 yards / 29 TD : 6 INT / 941 rush yds, 25 TD 2006: 255 for 399 / 3,305 yards / 29 TD : 14 INT / 499 rush yds, 11 TD 2005: 241 for 385 / 2,720 yards / 20 TD : 7 INT / 244 rush yds, 6 TD 2004: 232 for 344 / 3,164 yards / 33 TD : 5 INT / 723 rush yds, 11 TD 2003: 203 for 328 / 2,568 yards / 17 TD : 5 INT / 525 rush yds, 6 TD 2002: 227 for 396 / 2,758 yards / 27 TD : 11 INT / 925 rush yds, 22 TD
Clearly, Urban has his own unique system with an exceptional QB leading the team this year. After looking at these numbers, June Jones comment appears less ridiculous when you consider both quarterbacks followed the "system" guidelines and excelled more than any other has in previous years. I'd still give the nod to Brennan being more of a system QB because Hawaii's game plan has never changed. Just throw it, whereas Urban Meyer has worked his system around Tebow and given him more opportunities to run because of his size and strength.
What also bothered many about Jones comment was that Tim Tebow isn't an accurate passer. He's 2nd in passer rating with 68.5 completion percentage. That's hardly poor.
There's also this stat:
Tim Tebow's Interception per Pass Attempt Ratio - 0.0189
Colt Brennan's Interception per Pass Attempt Ratio - 0.0297
I know Jones is just running his mouth to support his QB, but I find it classless he continues to dog other teams and schools in the process. Let's see how Brennan performs against the Bulldogs and we can have some finality to Colt Brennan's success.
If you were to take the numbers for Tebow and carry them out so his attempts matched Brennan--Tebow slaughters Brennan in virtually every category! Some on one of the Gator message boards, with obviously way too much time on their hands, did that and it is amazing!

You'd have to then take away his rushing yards, but I've always argued 30-40 QB's could do exactly what Brennan is doing in that system
Yea June Jones was trying to hard to support Colt Brennan, he should just stay with the facts.
Here's the facts about Colt Brennan.
1. Broke the NCAA record for most TD passes in two seasons (now has 88) and is one TD pass shy of the NCAA single-season mark of 54 set by Houston's David Klingler in 1990. (Klingler also held the two-season record of 83)

15. Helped Hawaii to a school-record nine-game win streak.
To be a Heisman they player also needs to be consistent. I say give Tim Tebow one more year. If he does the same thing the next year then no questions ask. His stats is great this year, but Colt Brennan has been great for two years in a row. Consistency is very important. Also part of being a Heisman is being a team leader and making your team win. Colt Brennan has brought his team back from many games and learned to adapt to the defense and score on any defense. He is adaptable, a team leader, consistent, and most importantly gives his team the wins.
Tim Tebow will be my favorite last year. The guy is a scoring maniac, but he needs to influence his and be a great team leader to get the wins to support him. In the NFL he would need that skill.

That's all great and it happened against nobody. Like I said, good player, deserves an award that represents a tremendous statistical effort against no one ... just like David Klinger and Andre Ware.

The proof was there when the beat Boise State and Washington. Also when Hawaii beat Purdue and Arizona State in 2006, Colt threw for more than 400 yard in each game and scored at least 3 TD passes. We are talking about Colt Brennan and his offense here. I'm trying to say he can score on any team's defense and throw 400 + on any team. The proof is there!!! Another thing you should know is this year we beat Washington; (who is a losing team) but they lost to big teams like USC, Arizona State, etc, but they did beat Cal and Cal did beat Oregan who beat a whole bunch of people. So Hawaii can play with the big boys and the stats aren't bogus. Also remember that Colt Usually stops playing in third quarter because of Hawaii blowing some crappy teams. And also remember he missed two games due to injury. His stats this year would have been way higher.
