Heisman Finalists: If Colt Brennan Is In, Why Is Graham Harrell Out?
Wednesday night the four Heisman Trophy finalists were announced: Tim Tebow, Darren McFadden, Chase Daniel and Colt Brennan. Only one of those names came as a surprise.

Voters are asked to submit their choice for the most outstanding college football player for the 2007 season. With that in mind I have a hard time figuring out why Brennan was even a finalist. Apparently they were enamored with his lofty passing statistics this year, but if that's the case let me present a quarterback who played against Big 12 competitive and put up even better "numbers."

Colt Brennan
337-472 (71.4%)
4,174 yards
38 TD / 14 INT
166.3 Passer Rating
Team Record: 12-0
Schedule Strength: 137

Graham Harrell
468-644 (72.6%)
5,298 yards
45 TD / 14 INT
160.5 Passer Rating
Schedule Strength: 74
Team Record: 8-4

Why not Graham Harrell? This is of course ignoring the other more deserving players like Dennis Dixon, Pat White, Kevin Smith and Andre Woodson for starters.

Why?  Nobody really knows why.  Some will claim he's actually one of the best players in the nation.  Others will look at the numbers and think they look familiar and then remember its because he's a Hawaii QB.  Truth is Colt Brennan was no where near one of the four most talented or four best players this year.

On a sidenote did Dennis Dixon get the 5th invite and turn it down or did the 5th invite just disappear?

That 5th invite appears to have been false information (which I believe came from ESPN, they are so on top of things).

You know who should be disappointed is Kevin Smith. He puts up the 2nd most rushing yards all time and they overlook him for a QB who didn't even have the top passing yards this season. This is all if we're looking at just numbers which has to have been the case for some voters. Kevin Smith even did it against a solid team like Texas.

I know I will look like a homer but Sam Bradford had comparable numbers to Brennan but with about 150 less attempts.

216-308 for 2879 yards 34 TD's and 7 Int's, 70.1% completion while being sacked only 9 times. 180.53 Efficiency rating. Team Record: 11-2; Strength of Schedule:59

Come on, you know the only reason Bradford isn't there is because he's a freshman.  When Tebow wins this year, maybe they'll start talking about freshman getting it.

Oklahoma is going to be scary good the next 3 years with him.

Tradition, I think, used to be 5 invites.  Last year there were only 3.  I am guessing they are just inviting those who have a decent number of votes.

And agreed on Brennan.  He is no where near the top 4!!

Amen, CF.  The whole Colt Brennan thing just makes no sense to me, especially when players with similar knocks (system QB) put up better numbers against better competition.

The thing that really scares me about this is that if the voters are dumb enough to send him to New York, why wouldn't they be dumb enough to give it to him?  If that happens, the Heisman will officially be irrelevant.

The good thing about Tebow winning it is the Heisman voters probably wouldn't want to give it to the same guy 2 years in a row so Bradford next will with a similar year will have a better shot.

Exactly.  Brennan is just that.  A system QB who plays in a weak conference.  Add to that the (Rainbow) Warriors non-conference schedule may as well have included Honolulu HS and Our Sisters of Perpetual Mercy Parochial Academy.

Of course, you could say the same thing about Ty Detmer in 1990...
