Here's Another Reason to Hate the Red Sox. They're Putting Ads on Their Jerseys.

Here's a great idea. Take a super profitable baseball team and place ads on their jerseys so they can make even more money. That way the super profitable team can continue to pound lesser teams that have no money.

That's apparently what the Red Sox are going to do. The team's uniforms will feature paid advertising for the first time ever during their two game season opening series in Japan.

Suck it Florida Marlins.

The ad will be for EMC, which is a technology company of some kind. Actually, I have no idea what it is, but I hope they go bankrupt.

By the way, if you were on the fence about the Sox, this move should officially push you into the "I hate their guts" camp.

Now, the logo really isn’t any more obtrusive than the World Series patches teams wear in October. But it does begin the slippery slope to baseball eventually becoming like NASCAR.

Nothing like A-Rod sliding into second with "Viva Viagra" plastered across his back. Yeah, can't wait for that.

It's kind of strange that despite all of the advertising we are bombarded with every day in this country, sports jerseys remain (for the most part) ad-free.

Look at every soccer club around the world, the corporate sponsorship is always bigger and in a more prominent position than the team logo.

Sooner or later we will move more in that direction, provided the rules allow it. I think it's up to the leagues to prevent this from happening if they want to.

If they did allow it, some teams will never do it, but if you were the Royals or Devil Rays and you could at least get a couple of million per year for having a giant logo on your uniforms, wouldn't you at least consider it?

They problem then becomes that a company would be willing to maybe throw $10-15 million at the Yankees, but only $3-5 at the Royals or Marlins.  Even then, the small market teams are getting screwed over.  I hope that the MLB, NBA, and NFL all take preventative action and outlaw them now, because it just looks ridiculous on soccer jerseys (or kits).

why would anyone hate the sox? what do they do to make someone hate them? They don't have a $218 million payroll like the yankees..I know they do have the second highest but its not over $200 mil.

Once you do it for 2 games, it's much easier to do it for 162.

Personally, I don't really care one way or the other, but it's a step in that direction.

If you hate the Red Sox for this, then you must also hate the Mets, Cubs, Yankees and Rays -- because those clubs did the same thing when they played in Japan.

Also, this wasn't a deal negotiated by the Red Sox - it was brokered by MLB Japan.  So, really, isn't that who this "hate" should be directed at?
