It has been a thought of mine for some time now, what if high school students were graded on participation of extracurricular activities such as football, basketball, cheerleading, wrestling, volleyball etc.. Even the name involved with such sports...extracurricular...would imply that these "sports" are a part of a school's curriculum, and as such, a grade or point value should be given. Instead, these activities are seen as a privelage without curricular benefit. I believe that students respond to positives and negatives just as older generations do, so why not grade participants? It would make for interesting try outs, and encourage individuals to maintain a level of excellence when in the different extracurricular activities offered at their schools. Not to mention, keep them involved in their sport. A scence on accomplishment is the reason I joined JV Basketball and other sports throughout high school, even then I thought I should have been graded on my performance. I also believe that this type of grading on sports would open a whole new field of certified coaches/teachers making sports a 100% school runned activities, (many schools require coaches be certified and not be teachers or administrators.) Its crazy enough just to work!
