Are we making too much of this story? If you're a Patriots fan I don't blame you for answering yes. You want this to die as quickly as possible. I would, too. Bill Simmons, 2 days after his Pats are Gods column, is doing his best to rationalize this as not a big deal but he even he knows this story isn't going anywhere. In fact, it's going to stay around for a while with more and more NFL personnel coming forward with their own anecdotes. This is the part of the story that surprises me most. Not that Belichick, or any other team, is trying to bend the rules (read: cheat), but that everyone and I do mean EVERYONE seems to have suspected these shenanigans for a long time. Pats fans will say this is just jealousy at their recent success which may be true, but why hasn't there been smoke elsewhere? Ok, there has been a puff with one other team. Nick Saban last year. Guess which coaching tree he stems from?
Anyway, it seems everyone keeps coming forward with the "now that someone else mentioned it first, I'll chime in" stories. Hines Ward didn't waste a whole lot of time sharing his suspicions.
"Oh, they knew," Ward said Wednesday. "They were calling our stuff out. They knew, especially that first championship game here at Heinz Field. They knew a lot of our calls. There's no question some of their players were calling out some of our stuff."Don't worry, I'm not going to put an asterisk next to the Patriots titles, but it's worth consideration. This story isn't going away, so there's no need to rush to judgment. Just saddle up for the next big black eye in sports. Ugh.
"You would hope that, during their run, when they were winning all their (three) Super Bowls, all that stuff wasn't going on," Ward said. "You look back in the past, and we played them in the championship games, and you kind of wonder. It seemed like they were a step ahead of us at all times, but those games are behind us. There's nothing we can do about it. You just look forward and see what the commissioner (Roger Goodell) will do."
