Hobey Baker Finalists Announced

The top ten finalists for the 2008 Hobey Baker Award have been announced.  The award honors the top player in college hockey throughout the year. 

 

Criteria for the award include strength of character on and off the ice, outstanding skills in all phases of the game, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements.

The final three will be announced on April second with the winner being announced April 11 from the Frozen Four.  So in no particular order, except alphabetical by school name, here are the ten finalists.

 

Nathan Gerbe(Junior, Boston College Forward)

-Nations third leading scorer(52 points)

-27 goals, third in the nation

 

Ryan Jones(Senior, Miami(OH) Forward)

-30 goals, first in the nation

-7 game winning goals

 

Kevin Porter(Senior, Michigan Forward)

-Nations leading scorer(56 points)

-28 goals, second in the nation

-14 power play goals, third in the nation

 

Jeff Lerg(Junior, Michigan State Netminder)

-19 conference wins, leads CCHA

-.935 Save %, leads CCHA

-1666:59 minutes played, leads CCHA

-4 shutouts, leads CCHA

-786 Saves, leads CCHA

-1.98 GAA, third in CCHA

 

Kevin Regan(Senior, New Hampshire Netminder)

-18 conference wins, leads Hockey East

-.940 Save %, leads Hockey East

-.934 Save % nationally, tied second

-3 shutouts, leads Hockey East

-1.83 GAA, leads Hockey East

 

Jean-Philippe Lamoureux(Senior, North Dakota Netminder)

-.929 Save %, second in WCHA

-.934 Save % nationally, tied second

-6 shutouts, leads nation

-1.74 GAA, leads WCHA

-1.63 GAA nationally, leads nation

 

T.J. Oshie(Junior, North Dakota Forward)

-51 points, fourth in the nation

-30 assists, third in nation

-53 points, second in the nation

-5 game winning goals

I haven't gotten the chance to see any of the non-CCHA guys, but from what I've seen, I'd pick Lerg or Porter for sure.  The little guy is a ridiculous goalie and has the fastest legs I've ever seen, and Porter is just the complete player.
