Hodgson predicts big year for Rooney under England jersey
England coach Roy Hodgson predicts 2014 to be a big year for Wayne Rooney. Hodgson believes this will be the year which will see Rooney become a big star on the world stage. The English boss expects Rooney to shine brightly for England in the World Cup this summer.
It is no secret that Rooney has struggled to make an impact for England in major tournaments. The 28-year-old has left his mark for The Three Lions at a couple of instances, but regularity has been Rooney’s main issue.
Rooney barely got himself noticed at the last World Cup. With his ongoing problems off the pitch and on the pitch for club and country, very little was expected of the Manchester United star eventually.
“My hope and the message to him is: 'this is your chance',” Hodgson said in reference to Rooney. “He is 28, that's a terrific age. This is the world stage, the perfect opportunity for him to prove to people in the world what we already know - that he is a very, very gifted footballer, a very good all-round footballer who is capable of playing in many positions.
“He is someone who is a leading light in his team which is one of the best in the world. It would be nice to see him reproducing that form for England and I am confident he will. It's a great opportunity to show that he is not just a great star in the Premier League, but that he is a world star.”
Hodgson further said that Rooney had the ability to take up responsibility, something he had done brilliantly at Manchester United. Hodgson wants Rooney to show such commitment once again, but this time for England.
The former Liverpool manager claims Rooney has always had passion to bring out his best for the country and he has shown exceptional driving force this season, which is why this year could be a “great year” for Rooney.
Hodgson believes Rooney is in great condition mentally and physically to lead England to glory. The former Finland and Switzerland coach claims Rooney’s exceptional abilities make him one of the best players on the planet and this would give England an edge in the World Cup.
Hodgson also said that Rooney’s No. 10 role for England will prove be the x-factor for the Three Lions at the tournament. Hodgson revealed that England’s opposition lay in fear of Rooney, which is why the England star is a huge asset for the country.
