The New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their name to the New Orleans Pelicans, as early as next year.
The city of New Orleans adopted the Hornets from Charlotte, when the team changed cities in 2002. After owner Tom Benson, age 86, bought the Hornets from the NBA this past year, he said that he wanted to change the name of the team and possibly even the colors.
So, why did they choose such an intimidating name like the “Pelicans?” Their other alternatives were Krewe (costume people who throw beads off floats during Mardi Gras) and Brass. The Pelican, on the other hand, is the state bird of Louisiana.
