The Houston Rockets introduced their marquee free agent, Dwight Howard, in a press conference on Saturday, explaining why he chose Houston over Los Angeles.
“I made this decision for me,” Howard said. “I want to be happy. If you can’t be happy when you’re playing, it’s not fun. I want to get back to being that guy who was playing and having fun but at the same time dominating…you only have one life, so if you’re frowning and you take life too serious you miss out on the good things in life. I’m not going to miss out on those opportunities by always having a frown on my face.”
It was obvious that Howard was not happy playing in Los Angeles last season, as evidenced by his feuds with Mike D’Antoni, Steve Nash, and Kobe Bryant. Now that Howard is in Houston, he will be surrounded by a much younger team that suits his personality better than the older personalities in Los Angeles.
Kevin McHale, Howard’s new coach said, “Back in college there was a guy from East Lansing named Magic Johnson who was kicking my tail in college, he kicked my tail in the pros too, but he smiled when he was doing it. He was out there and he had fun.”
Now that Howard is in a situation that fits his personality and his playing style, look for the big man to reinstate himself as one of the most dominate players in the game once again.
