Brock Lesnar is poised to become the next big UFC heavyweight superstar. In a relatively weak division, Lesnar could shoot to the top pretty quickly, and his win over Heath Herring is a great start.Lesnar is huge. He's one of the biggest fighters in the heavyweight division, and is almost in danger of being OVERweight for the UFC's heaviest division. But he's still one of the quickest and most athletic fighters in ANY division. His wrestling skills are superb, his striking is overpowering, and he has more potential than any other heavyweight in the UFC.
Lesnar looked outstanding against Herring, as he was aggressive and dominant during the entire fight, in terms of keeping Herring on his back, and not allowing him to attack. He learned his lesson after his submission loss to Frank Mir, and left Herring no opportunity whatsoever to make him tap. However, he didn't create any opportunities of his own.
Despite being in control and on top of Herring throughout the fight, Lesnar wasn't nearly as aggressive with strikes or submission attempts as he should have been. When Herring gave up his back, a more experienced fighter would have locked in leg hooks and beat Herring mercilessly. Lesnar was hesitant, only throwing a few punches here and there. When Lesnar had Herring in side control, he could (and should) have been looking to either pound him into defeat, or at least attempt a submission. But Lesnar was obviously undertrained in BJJ, only made one attempt at a submission, and it was a weak one anyway. While he still got a convincing win over a very good fighter in Heath Herring, it could have been a lot MORE convincing, if Lesnar's dominance carried over more into his ground game.
If Brock Lesnar is ever going to become one of the elite heavyweights in the UFC, he will need to train heavily in BJJ. Guys like Antonio Noguiera, Fabricio Werdum and Cheick Kongo might prove to be a lot more of a challenge than Herring was, and not everyone will be as susceptible to Lesnar's powerful punches as Herring. Lesnar has an outstanding chance to be one of the best, but he better not rest on his laurels yet.
