The “Tail” of the Jacksonville Jaguars, with a Side of Raider Nation.
Many people around the NFL wonder as to how Jacksonville, Florida has an NFL team and the city of Angels does not. First, let me defend Jacksonville because it is more deserved of a team than one may think.
(I would also like to point out that in my research for this article I was unable to use the US census website---- thanks government)
Even I couldn't believe that Jacksonville is actually the 12th largest city in the United States, finally they made the top half in something! Over 800 thousand people live in Jacksonville and the median age is just about 34 years old. You're telling me that 34 year old guys don't want to go see a live football for practically nothing, yeah right. The problem doesn't lie with the fans, or a lack there of, the problem is the front office, they are the definition of incompetent.
Billionaire owner Shahid Khan needs to appoint the right people in his front office, that goes without saying. Now this is David Caldwell's first season as Jaguar's general manager but he has already shipped off left tackle Eugene Monroe to the Baltimore Ravens for 4th and 5th round picks in this year's draft, which looks to be very strong. If Jacksonville wants to become a solid team once again those in charge of drafting must do an exceptional job of evaluating talent and draft those players because this team has been B-A-D for the last few seasons and it shows. The Jaguars have been in the lower half of attendance for years now and that will not change until players like Blaine Gabbert are off the team(really, my 9 year old cousin knew he was bad).
Hope is not lost in Jacksonville. Florida loves its football, and there is a good amount of New York retirees that live there that they probably miss going to professional football games....BADA BING BADA BOOM they can go to Jaguars games. With a good team on the field, people will go to games. But let's just say Jaguars fans aren't the most loyal and when their team stinks they don't show up.
This year the Jags are so miserable that the promotions department thought it would be a great idea to give away free beer at least at last week's game against Indianapolis. Abysmal and pathetic. I can't even 'legally' drink and I know that giving away alcohol, as awesome as that sounds for a college student..it is just a terrible idea and the person responsible for approving it should be fired. As if the team isn't bad enough, they are now associated indirectly with supporting excessive alcohol consumption.
Lastly, I will say that I would be the first to sign a petition to keep the cats in Jacksonville. There's no doubt that Los Angeles needs an NFL franchise back in the Hollywood hills but the Jaguars is not that team. Move the Raiders back. There is already plenty of black and silver in LA and it's not like attendance has been great in Oakland anyway(dead last in 2012). I was only three when the Raiders moved back to Oakland and frankly, I would like to see them return to LA, just because.
Advice for the Jaguars: Release Gabbert he's just so bad...so bad
