Ok I know that I am a grown adult but whenever i come out of the grocery store after stocking up on necessities such as Diet Pepsi, Ramen Noodles, Chunky Soup, and Beef Jerky, when ever I see a machine full of Mini NFL football helmets I always have to buy one. If I'm feeling extra saucy maybe even two.It got me thinking about my history with these. You really can't do much with them especially now. In the "old days" they used to come in a white bag and the local gas station would sell them. Me and my friends would upset the owner by digging through the box. Looking through the plastic to see what teams were in there.
Mostly the only teams left would be the "Baltimore" Colts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (With that wonderful orange and white), and the "St. Louis" Cardinals. Remember that this was the early 80s so those weren't exactly powerhouse teams then.
If you were lucky enough to find a Pittsburgh Steelers or Dallas Cowboys helmet you felt like Charlie when he found the golden ticket.
Back then the joy was also putting the stickers on. Being careful not to put the middle stripe on crooked. You even had to put the face mask on.
Today the helmets look cooler but the masks and helmets are all assembled, style has won over substance.
My question is does anyone else buy these helmets? Do you have any fond memories or do I just need therapy?
By the way yesterday i drew the Baltimore Ravens and the New Orleans Saints so in their honor I will be picking them to win later in the week.
