Idea of the Week: Arena Football League Team to Give Season Ticket Holders Refunds If They Don't Make Playoffs

For years, the Arizona Rattlers played in front of sell-out crowds for most of their home games. It was not a coincidence that they made the playoffs 12 straight seasons. Good teams kept fans around, which helped to make the Snake Pit one of the toughest places in the league to visit. However, the past few years, attendance has dwindled, and the Rattlers missed the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years.

The team's new owners have an idea that is believed to be unheard of in professional sports: if the Rattlers fail to make the playoffs next season, they will give season ticket holders complete refunds.

The ownership group, led by Brett Bouchy, are long-time AFL fans. They hope that this move will bring back fans who may have stopped coming to games, while bringing in new fans as well.

"Imagine going to somebody with a little interest in Arena football, try us for a year, and if we don't make the playoffs, get your money back," Bouchy said. "But we think they'll see what a great sport it is and be a long-time season ticket holder. That's the idea, to attract people who know about us but hasn't tried us."

Not a bad deal. If the team sucks, you get to watch for free. If they don't suck and they make the playoffs, you'll get your money's worth anyway.

Only time will tell if the ploy succeeds or not, but it's an intriguing idea that many fans will undoubtedly hope will be tried by their favorite teams.

The Hawks tried something like that a few years back.  If the Hawks didn't make the playoffs, season ticket holders would get to tryout for the team the next season.......both season ticket holders!

6 of 8 teams make the playoffs in that conference. there wont be ANY season ticket holders if they dont make the playoffs this year. they're gonna need what, 7-8 wins?

here is another top idea..   personal liability for management and ownership of teams.

simple idea--  if your team does not make the playoffs for 10 years, the city and state can fine you.

Management and managers--    up to HALF of what you earned while with the team over this period...      so if you are the GM and made $3 million a year and were with team all 10 years, then the state or city can fine you up to $15 million.

Owners---  up to 10% of their earnings..  note:  not PROFITS, but earnings.

Oh, and of you try to leave after 9 years or even 5 years to avoid this, you are still liable for those years you were with the team if the team goes on to reach 10 years.

In other words, win or suffer the price.   if you are making the money but not producing playoff runs, then you have failed the fans.

this would also mean teams who haven't made the playoffs in 7 or 8 years BETTER spend the money and make the right talent appraisals in the 2 or 3 years they have left.

Just an idea to throw around..  maybe not as cute as the idea of giving fans dates with the cheerleaders, but...

I love this idea.      I don't think all teams can afford to do this, but I do think there is not enough pressure on enough teams' management to make playoffs and win titles..

Screw the refund, the girl in that photo and a couple of jerseys will work just fine.

I know the girls down there don't have the greatest reputation but I hope they don't get around that much.

It helps that the owners are worth over $100 million. They estimate they could lose $2-5 million. If it pays off, the extra sales & value for the team would be far more than that down the road. If it doesn't, it's a drop in the bucket for them.

They must not care about the potential loss then. I get upset over losing $20.

I hadn't thought about that. I wonder how they will deal with that possibility.

I would think about buying season tickets, but I doubt I will still be in Arizona by the end of the season.

It'll put a ton of pressure to perform on them. I see them hemorrhaging money, if they're not careful.
