I'm Ready for March Madness
The Super Bowl was February 3. The build-up the week before the game, the game itself, and talk about it for a solid week after was awesome. The game lived up to the hype. But the letdown has been huge. Here in Chicago, the hiring of Marc Trestman as coach, and a completely new coaching staff was news. But how much can I listen to the circle-speak that all new coaches do. They want to say the right things, not look to anger anyone right off the bat. Boring. Time will tell how this works out, but for now, how many months until training camp?
This past week was the NFL Combine for college players. All I heard about for the whole week was Manti Te'o and Tyrann Mathieu. Te'o did mediocre at best from what I can tell from his reviews. Didn't blow anyone away, but was still leadoff sports news across the board. Why? I'm at a loss. I am so over this guy. I can only hope that the Bears are not even considering this guy-I can't take any more daytime talk show drama. Then there is Mathieu, Honey Badger. This kid was one heck of a player and did make a good impression in the combine. But his off the field issues have affected his on-the-field opportunities. This kid has not gotten his act together and has a big mouth-speaking out about Calvin Johnson. All of the talk around Honey Badger can only make his ego that much bigger. Here's hoping Mathieu can get his act together, but the talk about him as headlines is enough already.
In the NBA this month, there has been very little to get excited about. The Heat went 12-1. Yawn. A bunch of guys I never heard of competed in the slam dunk competition at the All-Star game. Yawn. The Lakers continue to battle internally and are crazy inconsistent, but yet continue to lead the headlines daily. Should they trade Dwight Howard? Should they keep him? How long does Kobe have left to play? Can't they all just get along. Yawn. Who cares. They stink. And then Derrick Rose decides he might not come back. Reggie Rose, Derrick's brother decides to say the Bulls aren't doing enough to back up Derrick Rose. And the Bulls go 4-8 during the month with multiple injuries and a likely rest of the season without their star. Ugh. Bad, bad month.
Baseball season kicked off with Spring Training. Yea. Besides enjoying spring training if you are hanging out in Florida or Arizona, does anyone really care about the games, stats and facts of spring training baseball? I didn't think so.
Now, the Chicago Blackhawks have had a historic month of February with the longest winning? Non-losing in regulation? streak in hockey history. Very cool. Excited for them. But as I am not a huge hockey fan, and they haven't really won anything yet...I'm interested but not really.
It is almost March. March means Madness. March means watching teams and players you know almost nothing about, shoot the ball from half court to the basket as time runs out to move on to the next round. It means everything in college basketball. It means, the best thing about sports in February is that March comes next.
