The wait to see who Pac Man will fight while he waits for a potential blockbuster matchup with Floyd Mayweather is over.
Current P4P #1 boxer Manny Pacquiao (49-3-2, 37 KO) will take on former Welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (34-1-0, 27 KO). These are two of the top 10 boxers in the world and this could be the year's biggest fight, with only the Floyd Mayweather vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight being a possible contender.
These two champions will fight at a catch weight of 145 lbs. Pac Man has only fought at a weight this high once before, when he fought Oscar De La Hoya at the welterweight limit of 147 lbs. The rumor is that Pac Man's team wanted Cotto to fight at 142 lbs, but Cotto resisted and they settled at 145. That means that this will be the most skilled, biggest fighter that Pac Man has ever faced because Cotto is in his fighting prime while De La Hoya was clearly past his.
Pac Man will be the clear favorite in this fight, given that Cotto has recently been KOed by Antonio Margarito (in which many people suspect Margarito cheated, as he was caught cheating in his next fight against Sugar Shane Mosley) and Cotto recently won a very controversial decision over a tough Joshua Clottey. That said, Cotto is the naturally much bigger man and he likely has more punching power than anyone Pac Man has faced before.
Like many other boxing fans, I think Shane Mosley is getting kind of shut out here as he is the current Welterweight champion and certainly Cotto owes Sugar Shane a re-match given how Margarito pummeled Cotto and how Mosley just as badly pummeled Margarito to win the championship.
But it is clear that the most money is in a Pac Man vs. Cotto matchup. It is also pretty clear that Floyd Mayweather wants Pac Man and Pac Man wants Floyd, so they had both better win their respective fights. Otherwise if either fighter loses, or if both lose, Shane Mosley enters the picture as the likely challenger to either Floyd or Pac Man.
So, boxing fans will purchase this fight just like they did with Pac Man vs. Hatton (which had over 800K in PPV buys). But will this fight sell to sports fans, and will this be a fight that people will get excited about?
And, who do you like? Pac Man or Cotto?

It has been two years later, what do you think about Pacquiao and Cotton now?
I was reading up on various boxers background how they grew up and made it to the top, very inspiring!
Boxing and the Olympics, but what about karate? :) Hopefully one day it will make it and maybe one of them will be from pleasanton martial arts; or maybe even a a local boxer in the olympics, or judoka.

But people who have been watching the fight game recently, especially with great fights that we've had in the last year, will be excited to see this fight and they'll pay for it. I'm confident this fight will do at least as much as Pac Man vs Hatton did and that was one of the biggest selling PPV fights of all time.
Well said LOL

As far as Roach goes, I agree that he's great. The problem is that Roach is really sick these days (with Parkinson's Disease) and he's not doing the bulk of day to day training for Pac Man anymore. Michael Moorer handled a lot of the training for the Hatton fight and while Moorer is no longer with Roach, there are legitimate questions about how much of the actual training Roach is doing these days.
Teddy Roach is sick but he's done his best in training The PACMAN. You can see the result so far with The PACMAN fights that he won. Just what Roach said to Gayweather's camp " Sign the Contract and we do the rest".

Pac Man will win but it's messed up that we have to go through all this to get what we want, Pac Man vs. Mayweather. Pacquiao is one of the few fighters equipted to be able to beat Money Mayweather, and I think he will when they fight.
8/17/09 | ken984662054
Of course no one wants fight to Mosley. At his age he's still dangerous and none of these young bucks want to risk losing to him and missing out on the Pacquiao sweepstakes. Mosley's problem is he's an older fighter that can still fight, does anyone want to Hopkins?

Thanks for the compliment! I agree, free fighting (like the recent Heavyweight Title bout between Klitschko vs Chagaev that was broadcast live on ESPN Classic) is great to get people into the game. HBO, while not exactly free TV, does show a lot of great fights at no extra PPV cost. The recent Cotto/Clottey fight was on HBO and wasn't a PPV, for example.
But people who have been watching the fight game recently, especially with great fights that we've had in the last year, will be excited to see this fight and they'll pay for it. I'm confident this fight will do at least as much as Pac Man vs Hatton did and that was one of the biggest selling PPV fights of all time.

Cotto will make weight, I don't think that is a problem. But you are right in the sense that he's likely to weigh 155 or so by fight time and Manny won't even be close to that size.

Many people, including myself, consider Cotto to be the uncrowned welterweight champ because of Margarito cheating. Which is why I really think that Cotto should fight Sugar Shane to make it defenitive who is the real welterweight champ.
7/22/09 | BluDevil | 618 respect
I think that is not far off. You could make the case that Cotto is really damaged goods now, since Margarito beat him so badly. But Cotto really hung in against Clottey in a fight that he could have walked out of many different times and won a decision. Instead, Cotto (and Clottey) showed a lot of heart and stayed in the fight to the end.
If the ref does not stop this fight, I think it has a high possibility of being a bloody match with a lot of punishment being dealt by both fighters.

Boxing needs to justify why people should pay $60 for the Pay-Per-View. They need to do more free television to bring people back. Good stuff on the fight itself, Cory.
7/22/09 | kapuso_ni_ka_enteng
I hope Cotto will hang there for at least 5 rounds.... I'd like to enjoy my drinks and my seat.

Manny will win, however this fight will be tougher than De La Hoya and Hatton fights combined.
7/22/09 | fourtime7 | 8 respect
cotto might come in at 160 on the day of the fight. don/t see how he can make weight. but if he hit manny flush it be nice to see if he can take that punch. but roach is the best training now a days so he devise a way to probably nutrilize cotto power. make the fight free if you reall want fans to come back to the sport. they each have a lot of money one free fight won/t hurt...
7/22/09 | rens_q82007
manny is best manny willl win

Regardless I think it should be a good fight and I think Cotto has the advantage beign the naturally bigger fighter.

I hope when you see him get knocked down by Pacman you will not say he was cheated again...
..Cotto won his last fight against Joshua Clottey by split decision..Pacman won his last fight by a KNOCKDOWN in two rounds...
7/22/09 | billycorpuz
This will be a great match...Cotto is a great puncher...but, Pacman will beat him in this match...Cotto should train hard (really hard) to defend himself..if not, Pacman will demolished him just like what he did to Hatton..
7/22/09 | Michael G | 32682 respect
All that Pac-Man will need to do is look a Cotto and he'll start to bleed, this fight will be stopped on cuts by the third round...Pac-Man victorious

I'll check it out because i like to see skilled fighters and these are two of the best we have right now... But man i miss the days of truly big ,mean ,ugly American boxers kicking each other's asses on some overpriced PPV channel!!
7/21/09 | marawaisimeli
Yeah, well noone else has brought out much interests in boxing ever since The Great Cassius Clay or Muhammed Ali... until now. I think Manny Pacquiao will soon tread on the great Ali's steps... I mean if you generally think about it boxing is coming back to the main stream.

Generally speaking, if there is a big story in sports I will have at least a passing interest. Heck, even UFC 100 had me a little interested and I've never watched MMA for much more than 5 minutes or know a thing about it. With all that said, I just can't find myself interested in this. I don't doubt the talents of either man, but it just doesn't interest me. Sports fans want to see heavyweights and these guys fall short. It will probably be a successful fight, but I can't see it bringing back boxing to the mainstream.
