Indianapolis Colts Versus San Diego Chargers: NFL Wild Card Live Thread
Can Indy Keep Their Win Streak Going? Or Will Lightning Strike Like It Did Last Season? [Wild Card Thread]
The Colts and Chargers have played some incredibly tight games in their recent history, and you have to figure it won't be much different this time either. The Colts are playing the best football of anyone in the NFL, having won their last 9 games. But even though the Chargers are 8-8, they're playing at home and they're playing well right now. Real well.

One of the things though that may sway this game in favor of the Colts though is that LaDainian Tomlinson has what seems to be a pretty serious injury. Just to be 100% clear, he has a detached tendon that connects one of his groin muscles to his pubic bone, according to team sources. Man, it hurt just to write that. Indy is susceptible to the run, and while I know San Diego's running game stunk most of the year, it was starting to pick up the last few weeks. Now, if Tomlinson can't go, that means Darren Sproles, who rushed for fewer than 350 yards this year, will become the numero uno running back. And you can't like San Diego's chances then. Although it should be noted that Sproles' yards per carry average was 5.4, but let's face it, he's not a #1 running back.

From the quarterback standpoint, we have the NFL MVP Peyton Manning going up against the best statistical quarterback in the league this season, Philip Rivers. In fact, if it turns out LT can't go, this game could turn into an aerial assault by both teams, since Indy has the worst rushing team in the league.

80% of FanIQ is going with the Colts to win on the road, and if LT is spending most of the time on the sideline, I concur. But then again, last year no one gave the Chargers a chance in hell against Indy in the playoffs and they came up with a win.

The Chargers always find a way to give the Colts trouble, but I believe!

I'm going with the Colts.  No Merriman, no(t as much) pressure on Manning = Colts win.

Nothing would surprise me the way this season has gone...but I say the Colts...

Both teams look pretty good right now. It's a shame that one of them has to lose, but I hope it's the Chargers.

This is why the Chargers hired Norv Turner

Nice punt. That actually gave the Chargers a chance.

If they win, Scifres is the player of the game by far, he's been ABSURD with these punts.

Holy crap, how does he take that sack.

NUTS!!!

Now that was the single stupidest playcall I've ever seen.  Empty backfield on 3rd and 2?  I'm not sure the Colts even deserve to win after that.

Yeah, I don't get it either.  You might get your chance to honor Scifres......

Good kick and good return.  This going to be interesting!

I hope the Chargers win so Scifres can be the MVP

More crappy coaching by Norv.  They had plenty of time, didn't need the first down spike.  All they did was waste a down, and now the Colts can still get the ball back.

31 seconds, 2 timeouts.

Thanks Norv!

What can Peyton do with 31 seconds and two time-outs?

Apparently not much.

And the Chargers won the coin toss, and most likely the game with it.  GAH!

These penalties are getting out of hand. The Colts are killing themselves.

I have a few qualms with this game.
1) That holding call on the 3rd down was just flat out wrong.  It happens on every single passing play.  You don't call that on the 1st play of the 1st game of the season and you certainly don't call it in OT of a playoff game.
2) Indy never had an opportunity with the ball in OT.
3) What is a team doing playing on the road against another team that finished a whole 4 games worse than them?

I have nothing against San Diego.  These two teams have probably been my two favorite to watch over the past couple of years. However, the way the game ended just doesn't sit well with me.  That said, my opinion doesn't really matter so congrats to the Chargers.

If I'm not mistaken, Sproles is a free agent next summer.  Me thinks he might've just cashed himself a sweet paycheck the next time contract negotiations come around

Also... we may have underestimated home field advantage.

FIX FIX FIX FIX FIX!   One of the least penalized teams in the NFL cant go one drive without getting flagged but the Chargers do virtually nothing wrong all night?  The officials took care of the Steeler game, and they took care of this one too.  Put them on the horsetrailer

Pure ignorance.  Every single one of those penalties was legitimate.  The Colts only have themselves to blame.

Mike, I agree with all three of your points completely.

But honestly, I'm sick of excuses.  Indy has won 12 games in the regular season, what, 78 years in a row now?  If you can't take care of an 8-8 team in the playoffs -- I don't care if the Chargers packed the flipping Big House with Bolts fans -- you don't belong.  Indy has to go through this every year.  They're in the top 5 of everyone's power rankings at the start and end of each regular season.  They're a surefire contender no matter what.  It's unwavering.  And I honestly can't imagine how it's possible to fail so much in the postseason.  It's mind-boggling.  There is really no other way to look at it -- they're remarkable choke artists.  They're utterly capable of making the extra play in the regular season.  They're utterly incapable of making the extra play in January.

I recall telling 100% something different a week or two ago; that this time around, if Indy bows out early, it's understandable, because they're just not that good.  I stand by the latter part.  At no point this season did I think Indy was a truly great football team.  They just found ways to win games.  Strangely enough, they had that in common with the Super Bowl team from a couple years ago.  But make no mistake -- this was awful.  They played a .500 team who was 0-5 against playoff competition in the regular season.

I don't care about the Colts' successes.  I'm ready to say, as an Indy partisan, they absolutely pale in comparison to the Patriots, and it makes me sick.  Physically sick.

I will stand by that 3rd and 2 pass call being the single worst play call I've ever seen in organized football.

Ignorance my ass!  I didnt say they didnt earn them, I'm saying they didnt call san diego for half they things they did.  The officiating was biased, and that was very clear.  Opinions differing from yours arent ignorant tough guy.

I'm a Colts fan, and the officiating seemed perfectly normal to me.  And how am I being a "tough guy?"

You're a tough guy because of how brave you are calling people ignorant from behind a keyboard.  Believe, face to face you wouldnt say that, so why write like that?  I guess "us people" that crack you up should go about our business and you can go back to dazzling the kids in the senior class chess club with your sports knowledge every day during lunch period.  Ask your mom to bring some more oreos down to the basement, I bet you're getting hungry by now.

I'll say it, and I'd say it to your face, too. Anyone who is whining about the calls is ignorant. Plain and simple. Just people looking for excuses for why their team was outplayed and gave the game away.

It's not whining man, it's math.  The officiating crew with the highest percentages of calls per game is gonna hit on more than anyone else, I got that.  If it's a "go either way" call, their gonna flag it, got that too.  But, teams dont just play a consistently disciplined game all through the season then all of the sudden committ infractions at that ratio.  If that were the case, both teams would have been as heavily called.  When I see one team getting flagged and another team doing the same thing consistently and no flag there are no other conclusions to draw.

Did I say the Colts played well?  (pauses to re-read the comments) Nope.  Did I say they deserved to win?  Nope.  Did I say they were anywhere other than exactly where they deserve to be with that level of playing?  Nope.  Doesnt change the fact that the officiating was biased.  I guess this is just San Diego's year, no matter what.

I see a lot of Colts players whining about how their team inexplicably got called for more penalties than the Chargers, but I haven't seen anyone give one example of a poor call where the refs missed something that should have been called on the Chargers, or made a poor call on the Colts.

Maybe, just maybe, the Colts (like they have done many times in the playoffs in previous years) played poorly, and beat themselves. Is it that shocking? It shouldn't be.

I would absolutely say it to your face, because it's true.  The refs didn't cost anyone that game.

And wow, oh my god I am so hurt.  Fat jokes?  Are you 5 years old?  If you're going to try to insult me, at least do it well.

Maybe the Chargers just didn't do as many illegal things?  Because you know, that's what happened and all.
