Blog Photo - Is Dale Earnhard Jr going to be the next Open Wheel Swap Driver? In 2003 it was Jeff Gordon who swapped rides with Juan Pablo Montoya.  At the time, JPM was a Formula One driver, and Jeff was at the top of his game in NASCAR.  Jeff had expressed an interest in piloting an open wheel car, so the two swapped rides at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Jeff had a few problems, and even went off track.

Then, it was Tony Stewart and Lewis Hamilton.

Now, it seems, Dale Earnhardt Jr and Graham Rahal are having the talk.  Both drivers are sponsored by National Guard, and Rahal visited the NASCAR race at Fontana last weekend.  Then the twitter feed ignited.  Graham suggested the swap, but Jr. jumped on it.  He freely admitted that he would be more likely to wreck Graham's ride than to get it around the track successfully, but said he was definitely in.
The two are in the process of trying to determine where they will do the swap, and how to work out all the logistics, but you can bet that if or when it happens, the cameras will be ready.  Graham's track of choice would be Indianapolis, but they have discussed Talladega, Daytona, even Pocono.  Motorbike driver, Nicky Hayden tried to get in on the action, but Dale Jr admitted he had "no business being on no bike", and told Nicky he could jump i his ride any time.

We'll keep you updated.

A desire to have it happen doesn't always mean they can work things out to have it happen.  I have my doubts as well...
