Comparisons between Gervinho and Robin van Persie have already begun. Well, we all know that Arsene Wenger likes Gervinho a lot, but is Frenchman bold enough to call Gervinho his new ace?
Arsene Wenger has been defending Gervinho for the greater part of the season. The Ivorian has been terrible with the ball until now. It seems like Arsene Wenger’s patience with the forwards paid off after all.
The Arsenal manager was found singing hymns about Gervinho in a recent interview before side travelled to Upton Park to hammer West Ham United 3-1. Gervinho was given a start in the game.
Time and again Arsene Wenger has explained how important Robin van Persie had been to Arsenal. Truth be told, Robin van Persie saved Arsenal from embarrassing finish in the Premier League last season.
Robin van Persie refused to sign an extension contract with Arsenal which allowed Manchester Untied to make a £24 million swoop for the 29-year-old striker. Robin van Persie’s absence left a huge role in Arsenal’s attack.
Now, Arsene Wenger is far from calling Gervinho Arsenal’s new poster boy, but he understands the Ivory Coast international has potential to become a huge asset in Arsenal’s attack. Gervinho can be used as a utility player in Arsenal’s attack. Apart from playing as a forward, Gervinho can also play on both wings and as an attacking midfielder.
“The thinking was to use well his quality of movement and his pace, but of course you have to overcome a little bit an obstacle that he doesn't correspond well to traditional image you have of a central striker,” Arsene Wenger said.
“He is not massive, he is not a guy who will go for high balls, but he can only try and I must say, he has improved his finishing and it is working very well at the moment.”
It is worth noting that Arsene Wenger can boast about producing a number of utility players and world class strikers; the likes of which include Thierry Henry. Therefore, Gervinho has a genuine chance of becoming one of the greats.
“I did that with Robin van Persie. He was more a technical player, it was not obvious to put him central striker,” Arsene Wenger continued. “I did it with Thierry Henry, I did it now with Gervinho and I think I will do it as well with Theo Walcott.
“They have other qualities that is well suited to our game - our game is based on movement and technical ability and they have that.”
