Is it time to put away the "Yankees Suck" chant?
Now That They Really Do, It's Time to Stop Reminding New Yorkers That the Yankees Suck
Red Sox fans have been chanting "Yankee Suck!" for years now, whenever they have the chance. We're not a very choosy bunch, and we'll shout it anywhere. Sox-Yanks game? Sure. How about a Sox-Mariners  game, when the Yankees score runs across the big-screen? Yeah, why not? Hell, I heard it at a Celtics-Pistons NBA playoff game a few years back. Anywhere, any time, the Fenway Faithful are prepared to let the world know how they feel about the Yankees, no matter how appropriate or relevant it may be.

Kevin Cullen, a writer for the Boston Globe, is calling for an end to the nonsense. He makes a lot of sense, really. I mean... the whole point of it was because we were sick of the Yankees waving the curse in our faces every time the rivalry was brought up. Since there was nothing to say to back up the Red Sox, we had to revert to one simple phrase... Yankees Suck. Since no valid argument could be made, logic was replaced by an obnoxious and immature catch-phrase, which would end all intelligent debate, and bring it to a level where maybe a Sox fan could win.

But now that the Red Sox have won 2 World Series championships in the past 4 seasons, and are set up for excellence for years to come, is it really necessary? Cullen believes (and I agree)  that it's time to move above that.

Instead of mindless chanting, how about mentioning names like Dustin Pedroia, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jed Lowrie, Jonathon Papelbon, Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz ... the list goes on and on. When Yankees fans want to brag about their storied past, tell them of our future. Sox OF prospect Che-Hsuan Lin was the MVP of the Futures Game this year. The Red Sox sent 3 players to the All Star game who were still in their 20's. 22 other teams didn't even HAVE 3 All Stars.

Maybe the Yankees DO suck. Maybe they'll finally miss the playoffs this year, for the first time in well over a decade. We can only hope. But instead of focusing on that, focus on the Sox and their bright future.

Current Boston Red Sox players under 30: Manny Delcarmen, Craig Hansen, Jonathon Papelbon, Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz, Jon Lester, Dustin Masterson, Daisuke Matzuzaka, Jed Lowrie, Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, Coco Crisp, Jacoby Ellsbury

Now THERE's something to shout about, Red Sox Nation.
