Isco feels privileged to be at Real Madrid, but is a true Madridista?
Isco is overjoyed for the opportunity to shine at Real Madrid. The former Malaga star exuberantly claimed “there’s nothing greater” than playing for Real Madrid at his unveiling ceremony at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Wednesday. Isco, who snubbed Manchester City for Real Madrid, hopes he can better his form at Los Blancos.
The young Spain international found himself in the middle of a tug-of-war between Manchester City and Real Madrid this summer. After helping Malaga reach the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League last season, Isco became one of the hottest transfer prospects this summer.
Manchester City and Real Madrid remained top contenders for Isco’s signature, but a long list of suitors were after the 21-year-old midfielder this summer. Manchester City appeared to have an edge over Real Madrid in the transfer process since they signed in the Malaga manager Manuel Pellegrini. The Chilean was expected to bring Isco along with him from Malaga.
However, what Manchester City forgot was that when Real Madrid come knocking on the door; you always answer it. At €27 million, many consider Isco to be a steal. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has already proved himself to be a world class talent. The youngster’s stunning form at the Under-21 European Championship in Israel is proof of his abilities.
Thousands of fans filled up the Santiago Bernabeu stadiums with chants of “Isco” at the unveiling ceremony. Official reports from Real Madrid confirm Isco has inked a five-year contract with the club.
“First and foremost I want to thank the president for fighting so hard to bring me here,” Isco said at the unveiling ceremony. “For a footballer, there's nothing greater than signing for Real Madrid. It's the maximum. I'm joining the world's biggest football club and I hope I will help the team and learn a lot. I'm 21 but I feel I'm prepared to play here.
“I had other offers from other teams but it was hard to say no to Real Madrid. Pellegrini was keen to take me to Manchester but once I knew Real Madrid were interested I didn't think twice.”
Media has lambasted against Isco for changing his beliefs once he knew Real Madrid were interested in him. Back in 2009, Isco confessed to be “a bit antimadridista” and called Real Madrid an “arrogant club”. Moreover, there are rumors suggest Isco is secretly a Barcelona supporter. Isco has been forced to admit he has named his dog Messi, but insists he is not a Barcelona fan.
“I grew up in Malaga so Malaga was always my team,” Isco added. “But now I'm here I'm the biggest Real Madrid fan there is. No one will doubt my dedication to this club.”
