Liverpool’s spectacular attempt to bring the legendary Alessandro Del Piero to Anfield has failed miserably. The former Juventus striker completed a move to the Australian side Sydney FC early on Thursday morning.

The new boss of Reds Merseyside, Brendan Rodgers hoped to bring the veteran to Liverpool in order to control his squad’s strike-force crisis. Presently, Liverpool has only two strikers in their 25-man squad for the season.

Luis Suarez and Fabio Borini are the two strikers left at Anfield. Adding Alessandro Del Piero to Liverpool’s squad would have buffed up Brendan Rodgers’ slender strike-force.

Brendan Rodgers admits it was a mistake to let go Andy Carroll on loan to West Ham United. Andy Carroll performed brilliantly against Fulham on his debut, but the striker picked up a six week injury dilemma.

Liverpool’s attempt to bring Michael Owen and Didier Drogba also went unsuccessful. Michael Owen inked a new contract with Stoke City just yesterday. Meanwhile, Didier Drogba’s Chinese club has snubbed rumors over the Ivoirian’s transfer.

Brendan Rodgers believes signing a veteran striker would provide Liverpool with the perfect boost, but his dreams got shattered yesterday when Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow officially announced the signing of Alessandro Del Piero.

“This signing is a major coup for Sydney FC and marks a historic day for football in this country. This is for all Australian football fans. Alessandro Del Piero is a global icon of the game and we are honoured he has chosen Sydney FC, ahead of many other options, as the club where he will begin the next chapter of his illustrious football career.”

On the other hand, Sydney FC’s chief executive Tony Pignata admits his side beat Liverpool to sign in Alessandro Del Piero.

“Liverpool have come in – and they’re a big club, there’s no denying that, but I think the attraction of Australia might sway us.” Tony Pignata said in an interview to Fox Sports Australia.

Initial reports have confirmed that Alessandro Del Piero has inked a two-year contract with Sydney FC. The contract will help Alessandro Del Piero make around £1.2 million per year.

Recent rumors suggest Liverpool might sign in Emile Heskey as an act of desperateness. If that is the case then Liverpool is in deep trouble this season.

Nonetheless, Liverpool is expected to bring a high profile striker to Anfield during the summer transfer window.
