Italy and Spain to meet in Confederations Cup semi-final
The 3-0 victory over Nigeria should have been good practice for Vicente Del Bosque’s side before the big game. La Furia Roja, the undefeated Group B team, booked their place in the semi-finals with a win over the Super Eagles.
An impressive brace from Spain’s left back Jordi Alba and a goal from Fernando Torres helped Spain acquire an easy victory over their opponents. The victory set a rematch against Italy, who were left tattered and defeat in the 4-0 rout in Euro 2012 final.
Vicente Del Bosque has warned his team against a complacent form and has promised to take no chances against the Azzurri. The Spanish boss believes Italy can become completely new team since it’s been a year from their defeat in Ukraine.
“Italy will be a very difficult opponent,” Vicente Del Bosque said. “It is going to be a re-match for them. We want to get to the final though.”
Barcelona defender Jordi Alba warned his team against the threat of Italy as well. The young Spaniard echoed the concerns of his boss in his post-match interview saying “the match against Italy is sure to be different from the final of the Euros”.
Compatriot and Barcelona teammate Gerard Pique also found himself amidst reporters following victory over Nigeria. The former Manchester United defender asked his teammates not to think about the prospect of meeting Brazil in the Confederations Cup final.
Brazil eliminated Spain from the Confederations Cup back in 2009. Spain will prepare for revenge over their defeat, although Brazil will be playing on their home soil.
“Let's not talk about a potential final, it happened to us at the last Confederations Cup in 2009 and we lost to the United States in the semi-finals,” Gerard Pique said. “Let's talk about the game that comes next against Italy.
“It's a totally different match, the tournament is different, the heat is different and they come in [to the game] after a nice tournament so far. They won the first two games and lost to Brazil but they played hard at all times.”
