Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez Traded To Yankees For Kyle Farnsworth
Yankees Trade For A Player Who Was Good Four Years Ago
It's never good when I see that a trade has been made for a guy that I didn't even know was still in the majors. And it's even worse when the only thing you had to give up to acquire that guy is Kyle Farnsworth.

But that's exactly what happened this afternoon. The Yankees, in desperate need of a catcher with Jorge Posada shelved for the season, traded away Kyle Farnsworth to the Tigers for Pudge Rodriguez.

Frankly, there's really only one way to look at this deal. The Yankees needed a catcher more than than they needed relief pitchers at the moment (even though they desperately need more relief help) and they got a guy who can at least provide solid defense. Pudge, after all, is a 13-time Gold Glove winner.

But he's not going to do an awful lot at the plate. Despite the fact that Girardi said Pudge is "hot" right now, Pudge hasn't been hot for almost 4 years.

Remember the first year Pudge was with Detroit? That was 2004, when he hit .334, had an on-base percentage of .383, hit 19 home runs, and slugged at a .510 clip.

After that season, as you probably also remember, a lot of steroid questions popped up around baseball. Pudge came back the next season and hit .276, with a ridiculously low .290 on-base percentage, hit 14 home runs, and slugged .411.

And that's been pretty much his average season since. All his power numbers are down, but what's especially weird is his on-base percentage is awful in comparison to what he had averged prior to the beginning of the 2005 season. I'm not sure what to attribute that to, other than that since pitchers know he's not juicing anymore, and is essentially just a singles hitter now, they challenge him more.

Basically, what I'm saying is that Pudge is nothing but a ghost of his former 'roided up self. Can he still play solid defense for you? No question. But is he the extra ingredient combined with the Xavier Nady deal that'll get the Yankees over the hump and past the Red Sox and Rays? Not a chance in hell.

This move for Pudge also looks pathetic in comparison to the Angels grabbing Mark Teixeira. The Teixeira trade was a move the Yankees used to make, now they're picking up washed up catchers. My how times change.

The other problem here is the Yankees could use some more relief pitching in my mind, and I have no idea where it's going to come from. Damaso Marte, whom the Yanks acquired in the Nady deal, already blew a lead in relief on Monday to the lowly Orioles.

If you want my take, these just aren't the same Yankees. While getting Nady was great, most of this team is old and the bullpen, since they made Joba a starter, is mediocre aside from Rivera. That's not a recipe for success at all.

Boston's still my pick to win the division with the Rays picking up the wild card.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention how Detroit will do by acquiring Farnsworth. Here's my answer: Who cares. They aren't even going to come close to making the playoffs anyway. Plus, if you just added Kyle Fanrsworth to bolster your bullpen, you might as well just call it a season.

The way I look at it, Farnsworth has been too inconsistent during his time with the Yankees, so he could barely be trusted anyway.  Even though I'm still not 100% sure of the Yankees bullpen, it's not like removing Farnsworth will completely cripple the bullpen.  Rivera would have to keep coming in and cleaning up the mess he made in the 8th inning.  I don't think anybody can argue that Rodriguez isn't a big upgrade over Molina.  Even though Molina has been great defensively, he hasn't hit at all.  This trade might not be the biggest splash at the trade deadline but it's a move the Yankees had to make.

Yankee fans, and I can say this from experience, the Disastero Marte Experience will be painful to watch. Mario is going to have to start getting ready for some 3 inning save opportunities.

All the fledgling Detroit bars about to go out of business are ecstatic.

No i agree with you. They couldn't do a lot more than what they did here. Too bad Posada got injured. But still, Pudge or Molina? That's not the kind of situation i want to be in.

Pudge is still solid, and Farnsworth is a huge waste of talent.  All this means is that the Tigers are waving the white flag.  The Yankees are getting a good player.

As a Tiger fan all I have to say about this trade is DUMB!!!! Why would tou trade a future Hall of Famer for a very inconsistant and loud mouth relief pitcher. This makes no sense whatsoever. I would rather go with the bullpen that they had before the trade. There must of been some hard feelings between Pudge and The Tigers for him to waive his no trade clause.

I think there had been hard feelings forming because the Tigers wouldn't give him an answer about whether or not he would be back next year.  That might explain this.

Pudge better be a LOT better offensively because he can't touch Molina defensively. I know, I know Pudge was one of the best ever behind the plate for years, but his arm isn't anywhere near where it used to be.

Still, not a bad trade. The Yanks can afford Rodriguez's contract, and no one in New York liked Professer Farnsworth anyways.

Brian Cashman seems to be pushing the panic button. He is obviously going to ride with Ramirez, Marte, and Veras out of the pen.
I'll say this Cashman is pushing all of his chips in with these last two trades: he's either going to look brilliant or the Yanks will be fading into oblivion by Sept.

There is this perception that the Yankees pen is weaker without Joba. That's actually not true. They have been better since he moved into the rotation. Check the numbers.

The Yankees actually weren't looking to trade for a catcher. But the Tigers GM called Cashman yesterday morning looking for bullpen help and figured with Posada out for the year, maybe they'd want Pudge. Cashman was smart to sell high with Farnsworth, because even though he has been very good these days, I still don't trust him in a big spot (see last Friday at Fenway).

Pudge gives the Yanks more offense out of the catching position. While Molina is a superior defender, he's not an everyday player, and if he goes down for a bit with an injury or something, do the Yanks really want Chad Moeller every day.

Aside from the Abreu trade a couple years ago, Cashman's moves haven't been all that splashy the last couple years. They are simply meant to strengthen the team's depth, and he hasn't had to give up a whole lot to do it. He's still held onto the prospects he feels will make an impact at the big league level in the next couple years.

i think the trade was a very good trade because farnsworth wasn't getting the job done consistently and they needed a catcher because posada out for the season they needed a catcher

i no his arm isn't the same as it was years ago but its still good and can hit
