The Knicks are hoping that JR Smith won't be the antidote for Linsanity
You may have heard a few things about them lately, with all the Linsanity going on.
The first and most obvious question: Is this a good signing for the Knicks?
Smith is notorious for being a bit of a chucker. He has never seen a shot he didn't like, and that might not be the best element to add to a mix that has suddenly been working well for the Knicks.
Carmelo Anthony will be coming back soon as well, nursing a strained groin. The Knicks might be going straight from the Lin-led winning streak that they've enjoyed lately to a completely different team.
Anthony and Smith are both players that enjoy having the ball in their hands. The Knicks' recent run has been centered around Jeremy Lin running the offense. Can they all co-exist and still help the team win?
There are two likely scenarios, and they are polar opposites.
The first possibility is that Carmelo Anthony and JR Smith will find a way to insert themselves into the rotation gracefully, they'll let Lin continue to play to his potential, and the Knicks will be better than ever. There's no questioning Anthony's talent, and Smith is one of the most athletic players in the league. If they all play well together, this team could be amazing.
The other possibility is that they could completely destroy the chemistry that has existed for the past two weeks or so, and the Knicks will be back to the same old Knicks that we've seen for years.
Most likely, they'll land somewhere in the middle. I'm guessing that they'll be closer to the "amazing" end of the scale, at least at first.
With Anthony, Smith, Lin and Amare Stoudemire, the Knicks should win a lot of games. If they play to their full potential, there might not be a team in the league who can beat them on a consistent basis. If they let guys like Anthony and Smith throw up too many bad shots, we could be seeing the end of Linsanity.
