NFL Opening Weekend never lacks intrigue, but this year's slate is shaping up to be one of the best ever. The worst game - Jets vs Dolphins - has instantly turned into a must watch with the Brett Favre and Chad Pennington drama. Now, one the NFL's biggest rivalries featured on Monday Night Football has some bonus trash-talking pizazz.
Just under four weeks until the Minnesota Vikings visit Green Bay on the first Monday night of the season and the Vikes are already talking some game. Namely, defensive lineman Pat Williams and Jared Allen.
Williams, the Vikings defensive nose tackle, was asked if he'd been keeping up with the Favre saga:
“Damn, that’s their problem. They’re going through all that as a team, trying to figure out if Favre or (Aaron) Rodgers was the man, while we’ve got the same team we had all offseason. I’m glad they got all that darn press, ‘cause when we go down there it’ll be the kid’s first start and his first damn loss.”
“I’m going to try to crush all of ‘em. That’s been the focus of my whole summer – the Green Bay Packers.”
“I’m going to try to crush all of ‘em. That’s been the focus of my whole summer – the Green Bay Packers.”
Allen, the newly acquired defensive end had a more particular focus.
“Playing Green Bay on Monday night to start the season – that’s everything you want. Hopefully, I can put my helmet square in the back of (Rodgers') spine. If I can do that and knock the ball loose, it’ll be a good day.”
As I've long predicted, it may last all of one quarter before the Packers front office wishes they had a capable back up quarterback. Best of luck, Aaron. I've got my odds on the big angry Pro Bowl defensive linemen.
