If, during a tussle, an NHL player is compared to a boxer, that's usually a good thing. However, if that boxer is Mike Tyson, it might not be such a good thing. In more ways than one, that player should probably lay off the finger food.
Jarko Ruutu apparently took a bite of Andrew Peters' hand during the Sabres' 4-2 win over the Senators on Tuesday night. Peters was a bit overdramatic, perhaps, as I'm not sure if the bite could have really hurt as bad as he was letting on, since he was wearing a glove at the time. Regardless, this brings up a few interesting points.
For starters, what was Andrew Peters' hand doing in his mouth? Ruutu didn't appear to make any sudden movements to bite it, so clearly Peters' finger was close enough to his mouth that he could just chomp down on it pretty easily. Why was it there, and what was it doing there for long enough for Ruutu to be able to do this?Second, what the hell was Ruutu thinking? Aside from being a despicably cheap move, it's disgusting. I don't know what's on those gloves, nor do I want to. It's gross.
Third, how DIDN'T Ruutu get some sort of penalty on this one? While I've already questioned how it possibly could have hurt so much, it's obvious that Peters was affected by it. He looked damn near tears as he was sitting in the penalty box. How do the refs NOT call a penalty on Ruutu for biting a fellow player? Is that not against the rules?
Just when I thought I was starting to understand hockey, they got all crazy on me again.
