Jay Bilas calls out Billy Donovan
READ MORE:
Jay Bilas says he's good friends with Billy Donovan. I find that hard to believe, because Jay has a quite a history of NOT calling out those people when they needed to be.

I'll Bilas credit here for calling the Donovan situation exactly what it is.

Billy Donovan made a pretty good case that he belongs in college and not in the NBA. The truth is, I can sum up with a single word the manner in which he handled his negotiations with the Orlando Magic, his acceptance of their head coaching job, his signing of a multimillion-dollar contract and his subsequent about-face to Gainesville.

Unprofessional.

Donovan's recent maneuver is one of the most unprofessional I can recall in college sports. He negotiated a contract with an NBA team, agreed to a dollar amount and the length of the contract, put pen to paper and signed it.

Jay goes on to suggest that Donovan be forced to pay whatever costs will incur to run around and replace him. Agreed. And pay for any losses that will result in cancelled season tickets. That's only fair for breaching a contract. Donovan had also better sign a LONG term contract when he gets back to Florida, because even naive recruits will be affected by this waffling.

Anyone else wondering why this hasn't been taken care of yet?

I'm telling you guys, Billy wants to go pro but his wife doesn't want to leave Florida.  I'm sure she was fine with him taking the Orlando job until she heard that college coaches don't make it in the pros.

I agree with Bilas wholeheartedly. To listen to a donkey like Dick Vitale sing the praises of Billy Donovan, saying the folks in Gainesville will be jubilant, makes me sick. Gator fans very well may be happy, but they should be more concerned about the fact that their coach makes and sticks by decisions like a 9 year old kid.

I'd love to see if Donovan is so quick to release a recruit from his Letter of Intent when he decides he's made a mistake in commiting to play ball for Florida.

I'm so bitter...I can't respond here in PG-13 fashion.

My guess is this - while on the outside for all of us to see in the fan world is the unprofessional manner in which Billy agreed, questioned, and then wanted out of his contract - while underneath, on the inside, or behind the scenes where the fan world does not see may have been an intangible that was undisclosed to Billy during the "brief" courting period by the Orlando Magic. Just speculating, but how about the possibility that Billy would have no administrative decision making authority. Possibly Billy was told he would have no input on who the Magic would draft, trade, or pick up (free agents).

Maybe, the rumors are true that it wasn't until after pen went to paper that Billy heard from his friend/mentor Rick, who might have said "Look at what happened to me in Boston. You are too good a coach to go through that. Find a way to get back to the Gators."

Something had to have occured especialy since the Magic opted not to hold Billy accountable for the penalty clause of the contract, and only placed a ban on him from taking a coaching in the NBA, I think it was for either 5 or 10 years don't remember.

Bottom line - I am glad to have Billy back, I am not mad or even slightly frustrated, I am simply looking forward to another year of Gator Basketball!
