Jay Mariotti has long been one of the more controversial journalists around, always quick to speak his mind, no matter how ridiculous it was. He has raised the ire of many, including the infamous episode in which Ozzie Guillen used an anti-homosexual term to describe Mariotti. There has been an entire website dedicated to Mariotti-hating.
This isn't without any good reasons. Mariotti has had his fair share of priceless moments. This Rex Grossman quote prompted Jay to write a piece on Grossman's cockiness. Problem is, Jay completely misunderstood the quote. While he thought Grossman was talking about how great the Bears were, Sexy Rexy was actually talking about the Seahawks being a much better team than they showed that day. Way to go, Jay.
Jay's had a ton of controversies over the years, including ones involving the front offices of both the Cubs and White Sox, as well as co-workers Rick Telander and Neil Steinberg. It's always fun to see who Jay's going to call out next, and what reason he'll come up with.
But alas, poor Jay will no longer be writing for the Chicago Sun-Times. He has resigned, saying essentially that newspapers are well on their way to becoming obsolete, and that he doesn't want to be dragged into obscurity with them. You'll still see him on Around the Horn, and I'm sure he'll find another niche somewhere else on ESPN, too.
It's quite a shame, because it's "journalists" like Jay Mariotti who contribute to the rising popularity of bloggers. Don't want to read Jay's inaccuracies, misquotes and insane ideas? Fine... read my blog instead.
Thanks for the memories, Jay. Good luck on whatever else you plan on doing.
