Jeremy Shockey Traded To The Saints By The Giants For 2nd And 5th Round Draft Picks
Goodbye Monumental Headache
It's about time this finally happened. Jeremy Shockey has finally been traded by the Giants to New Orleans (pending a physical, of course). Hell, as far as I'm concerned, they could have just dumped him in New Orleans and I would have considered this a great deal. Instead, the Giants will get future 2nd and 5th round draft picks, which is not a bad haul.

Interestingly, the compensation is the same thing the Saints offered New York back in April during the draft, and it was turned down. Perhaps Shockey found some way to piss off the Giants yet again that we don't yet know about.

Anyway, you had to figure this was bound to happen. There were serious questions about whether or not Shockey's incredibly loud mouth and obnoxious attitude were causing problems for Eli Manning. That question seemingly got answered when Eli led the Giants through the playoffs and to a Super Bowl victory without Shockey. It also helped that Kevin Boss, Shockey's replacement, simply shut his mouth and performed, thereby making Shockey look quite expendable.

On top of all that, as soon as Shockey went down with the injury, there was almost an immediate rift between him and ownership. Shockey wasn't on the sidelines during the Super Bowl, although he claimed it was because the Giants wouldn't let him be down there.

He also decided over the offseason not to attend the Giants' White House ceremony and he pulled the hilarious move of responding to negative press by claiming he'd be quiet...all while barking about how he'd sit out minicamp. What an idiot.

So, in my mind, this is a good move for the Giants. But is it a good move for the Saints? I'd say it has the potential to be pretty big for the Saints. Eric Johnson and Bill Miller had pretty decent seasons last year for the Saints, but Shockey's clearly an upgrade. If he can keep his mouth shut, which admittedly seems unlikely, you'd have to think he becomes a favorite target for Drew Brees and could help propel them back to the playoffs.

The natural question is which will damage New Orleans more:

Hurricane Shockey or Hurricane Katrina?

Which will be higher this season; Shockey's yards per catch or his blood alcohol?

Oh come on. He's no Cedric Benson.

Still, I say it's a tie.

"Perhaps Shockey found some way to piss off the Giants yet again that we don't yet know about."

I'd say getting into a shouting match with the GM could have been the straw that broke the camel's back.

Definitely addition by subtraction for the Giants, who won the Super Bowl without him last year!!

Kevin Boss' fantasy value just skyrocketed.

as a die hard giants fan. i BEG to differ. this was prob. the dumbest move i have ever seen! I mean this was deppressing! The Giants should not have went after draft picks (if anything). I was really hoping Shockey was a Giant next season.

Dumbest move you've ever seen? They got some more draft picks, got rid of an overpaid, overrated, underachieving loudmouth, and they have a chance to give Kevin Boss more playing time, after he proved to be BETTER than Shockey, and a key to their SB run last year.

Are you serious? Depressing? The offense looked better WITHOUT Shockey.

overrated?
-slightly

overpaid?
-who isn't

underachieving?

-hahahahaha

loudmouth?
-well yea

Boss appeared to be better because no one knew who he was! therefore he was not as covered as tight as say a guy by the name of shockey would be covered!

Shockey is in the top three TE's in the game! He is an amazing blocker, has great hands, weak in rout running, and he did all that in NY!

Draft picks are nice, but if we had went after a guy like o0o I don't know maybe Taylor then i wouldnt be so dissapointed. But 2 draft picks? I would rather keep Shockey!

I mean could you imagine the endless possibilities with dual TE's with Shockey and Boss? But no we had to get rid of him!

Just dumb!

Not a bad trade for New Orleans.  They have quite the offense now, and Brees has the history and confidence to tell Shockey to shut the hell up.

As for the Giants, they have to pretty happy to be getting 2nd and 5th round picks for a guy they obviously did not need.

So can anyone help me here, how is this dumb? I seem to recall the Giants got better as a TEAM last year after this ingrate was hurt. Didnt the Giants win the Super Bowl without Shockey? Addition by subtraction. Plus he may be a good TE but not top 3. I would take Gates, Gonzales, Whitten, and Watson before I would even think of Shockey. Heck, I would take Boss before Shockey

"Shockey is in the top three TE's in the game"

Jason Witten, Antonio Gates and Kellen Winslow would beg to differ. And more, but since you said third, I only gave you 3 who are undeniably better.

i love how you ignore everything else i specified...no matter

Shockey is a better blocker than Witten other then that they are about the same.

the only two TE's in the league that are all around better than Shockey.

Gates-C'mon i mean it's almost unfair to even call this guy a TE. He is practically a reciever!

and ofcourse Gonzalez!

Shockey entered the pro bowl 5 outta his 6 seasons! And since entering the league, he is 3rd in receptions and tied for 4th in TDs. The guy is an animal and the Giants are mega-dumb for doing this!

You are delusional. Shockey isn't as good as you think he is. It's not even close. But don't worry... you'll see.

I don't need to back up anything. You just said that Shockey was a better blocker than Jason Witten. I have nothing else to say to you.

Sure Shockey could block...  The only problem is that ever since the new offiensive scheme asked him to become a TE rather than a #3 wide out he's been a whiny little sissy.  If you're a TE in the NFL, you block if that's what the play calls for.  You don't block and then whine about how you're not being used enough...

I was happy when I heard the rumors around the time of the draft.  I'm even happier now that they've come true.  The Giants need a team player more than they need a pro bowl prima-donna and over-grown cry baby.  Kudos to the front office for making the harder right decision on this one.

Speaking as a Giants fan, I always thought Shockey was overrated. Sure, he's a good blocker. But he constantly drops passes in big moments. He's an emotional guy, nothing wrong with that, but it came out in a way that was detrimental to the TEAM. He was always screaming for the ball in a big spot... but what did he ever do to earn the trust to be used in that spot?

Also, the Giants offense is built on the running game, and so Shockey was utilized more as a blocker and less as a passing option in recent years (especially when guys like Plaxico, Amani, and now Steve Smith emerged as better receiving options). I think a change of scenery will do him well, and the Saints have an offense that seems like it would utilize Shockey's skill set better than the Giants could.

It's a win-win for everyone, I think. Shockey was not happy in NY for whatever reason. He was a malcontent. He's almost 28 years old, it's time to grow up and stop acting like a baby. The Giants don't need to deal with that crap. I, for one, won't miss him, and I wish him luck in New Orleans.

make 5 pro bowls and be in the top 4 in recieving stats for TE's since 02 maybe?

Exactly! Shockey is one of the best blocking TE's in the game! why would you get rid of that?

So tell me when did he make that 5th pro bowl. He is an ingrate and a me player. But isnt it funny how after he got hurt and Eli did not have him whining, and screaming for the ball all the time the Giants played better and won the SB. I always thought it was about the team and not personal stats. I guess according to you its not

it is. and you are 100% correct. However Shockey fits the Giants offense PERFECTLY. Hence the reason they drafted him!

The me me me me players tend to shut up after the team wins...look at T.O. and Moss. I thought that now that the Giants had won a SB that Shockey would change his ways and trust Eli more. But we won't find out now because of the sheer fact that the Giants traded him.

Second that.  When, pray-tell was this 5th Pro Bowl?  And if you can name 3 TEs that played in the NFC during each of those FOUR years he made it to the pro bowl WITHOUT using a search engine I'll give you a cookie.

He was jealous they won the SB without him. It has been obvious. As a Giant fan you should be happy. If the team lives up to expectations and uses the SB as a springboard they could battle the 'Boys for the division. This is a case of addition by subtraction. He had the talent, but if he had the mental ability of a Mark Bavaro he could have been one of the greats

Off the top of my head it would be Whitten of Dallas and Crumpler when he was with Atlanta. But I cant really think of anymore. Maybe Alex Smith of Tampa, but I dont think he ever made a PB. Walls?

well as a giants fan i am anything but happy with this dumb move

We found out it wasn't going to happen when his antics and his confrontation with the GM combined to form a huge chip on his shoulder.  I've always been happy with Shockey's abilities and contributions to the Giants, just haven't been one of his attitude.  Boss fulfilled the role well enough to get the Giants through the playoffs and win the super bowl, and so far his attitude hasn't been an issue.

As a Giants fan, those reasons combined with the HUGE amount of cap room they just freed up, I couldn't not be happy with this smart move.

...  And Danny gets a cookie!
