Jets Make Starting QB Decision On Coin Flip

When You Do Something Like This, You're Guaranteed To Have A Bad Year
>7 days ago
Jets fans may have been excited about snagging Vernon Gholston in the NFL Draft, but unless he can play quarterback, things aren't really going to change for the Jets. Right now the QB situation there is so muddled that the Jets simply had a coin flip - yes, a coin flip - to determine who would work out with the first team this week. Unfortunately for all you Jets fans, the coin flip was between Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens. Pennington won, but fans of quality QBs obviously lost.
Anyway, I'm not sure where this QB controversy technically ranks in terms "worst QB controversy ever", but it has to be up there. Pennington is a shell of his former self, has spent the offseason in tons of trade rumors, and NFL teams seem to have finally figured out how to punish him for not having a strong arm, even though he's always been very accurate. Clemens, meanwhile, hasn't shown much of anything so far.
Also both guys were terrible last year. Pennington threw for 1,765 yards, 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions, while Clemens had 1,529 yards passing with five TDs and 10 INTs in his second NFL season.
It continually blows my mind that of all the people on this planet, there are only a handful who can play quarterback in the NFL at a competent level. The fact that guys like Cleo Lemon, Joey Harrington, Quinn Gray, Kyle Bowler, and Rex Grossman took significant snaps in 2007 is nuts.
And if you think the Jets are in trouble at QB, good God just look at the Bears. They didn't draft a single quarterback in the draft. I hope they're going to find a free agent QB somewhere, because otherwise they'll have a worse QB controversy than the Jets. Grossman vs Orton vs two undrafted free agent pickups. Oh yeah! Feel the excitement!
I know a lot of people think it's nuts how much pro athletes get paid, but in all honesty, good quarterbacks are so rare I think they may actually deserve the money they get.
