Jets invite veterans Kellen Winslow, Mike Sims-Walker for tryout
The 29-year-old Kellen Winslow was among a handful of players invited to the New York Jets’ mandatory minicamp on tryout basis next week. The group of tryout players also includes veterans Mike Sims-Walker (wide receiver) and Leger Douzable (defensive lineman), as well as undrafted free agents Mark Jackson, an offensive tackle from Glenville State, and Mason Robinson, a cornerback from Rutgers.
Kellen Winslow is set to visit the New York Jets when they kick off their three-day minicamp on Tuesday. He could help fill out a void at tight end after the New York Jets lost Dustin Keller to free agency when he signed with the Miami Dolphins. The New York Jets have no proven tight end on their offseason roster, with Jeff Cumberland, Konrad Rueland , Chris Pantale, Mike Shnahan and former rugby player Hayden Smith currently under contract.
Jeff Cumberland is the only tight end on the depth chart who has put up stats of any significance in the past. He caught 29 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns with the New York Jets in 2012. The rest of the players on the depth chart combined for 13 receptions and 107 yards last season.
Last year was also a bit rough Kellen Winslow, who was released by the Seattle Seahawks prior to the first game of the 2012 regular season. The Seattle Seahawks had acquired Kellen Winslow in a trade that offseason, but were forced to cut him after he refused to take a pay cut. Kellen Winslow picked up the 2012 season with the New England Patriots in mid-September. But he only spent a week with the team, catching one pass in one game for the New England Patriots before requesting his release.
Selected sixth-overall out of the University of Miami in the 2004 NFL draft, Kellen Winslow spent the first four seasons of his career with the Cleveland Browns – including making his first and only trip to the Pro Bowl after catching 82 passes for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns in 2007. Kellen Winslow spent the following three seasons with the Tapa Bay Buccaneers.
Over his nine-year NFL career, Kellen Winslow has played in 93 games, making 438 receptions for 4,848 yards and 23 touchdowns. If Kellen Winslow can prove that his balky right knee is as healthy as he claims, then he have little trouble convincing the New York Jets that he is worthy of a roster spot, to eventually climb atop of a shallow depth at tight end.
Mike Sims-Walker, who hasn’t played football since with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2011, will try to prove to the New York Jets that he’s worthy of a look. The third-round pick in the2007 NFL draft, Mike Sims-Walker spent the first three years of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, followed by a brief stint with the St. Louis Rams, before re-signing with the Jaguars midway through the 2011 season. Mike Sims-Walker appeared in 47 career games while catching 134 passes for 1,798 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Leger Douzable recorded 57 career tackle sand one sack while playing for six NFL teams in five seasons.
