Jets re-sign All-Pro kicker Nick Folk
Financial terms of the contract have not been released yet.
Nick Folk converted 77.8 percent of his field-goal attempts (21 of 27)in his third season with the New York Jets; hitting his longest field goal attempt on a 54 yarder in 2012, while three of his six misses came on blocked attempts. His stats were also slightly stunted partly since the entire special teams collapsed this past season. Nick Folk also made all 30 extra-point attempts last season.
Although Nick Folk’s career percentage of field goals made is 77.9 (134 of 172), ranking him 28th among active kickers in the league, he has a greater success rate in the fourth quarter. Nick Folk converted 93.3 percent of kicks in the fourth-quarter, ranking as the league’s second-leading player since 1991 in terms of late game kicks. Nick Folk also made all 242 extra-point attempts over his six-year NFL career.
Last week, New York Jets special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica (who replaces retired special teams coach Mike Westhoff) praised Folk's skills and seemed optimistic about his return with the team next season.
"Nick’s done a lot of great things for us. We’re really appreciative of the things he’s done in the past,” said Ben Kotwica. “When I look at Nick, I think back to the kick there on opening day against Dallas and obviously the playoff kick there against Indianapolis. Then you had the game-winner last year against Miami.”
“The time that Nick and I have spent together has been very rewarding,” added Ben Kotwica. “I don’t know how things are going to shake out in the future and we’ll just have to see how all that lays out to rest here in the next few weeks and months."
Nick Folk is the second unrestricted free agent who was re-signed by the New York Jets this offseason. The New York Jets have already lost five players during free agency.
However, it’s possible the New York Jets could bring in another leg to this offseason for Nick Folk to prove his place on the team. Nick Folk has been in kicking competition during each of the two previous offseason. The 28-year-old Nick Folk beat out Josh Brown, who recently signed with the New York Giants, for the position during training camp last year.
