The Versus announcers (who were atrocious, more on them at the bottom) insisted this was the biggest upset of the season, bigger than Appalachian State over Michigan. Do you agree?
Stanford was a 40-point underdog, and with a backup quarterback making his first start upset national champion favorite USC at home, no less. I still argue a Division I-AA (no succumbing to the FCS BS) team upsetting the winningest program in college football history is larger, but this was special in its own right.
The underlying coaching rivalry added to the story. Jim Harbaugh made it a point this offseason to not be intimidated by Pete Carroll and played a few media games with him. A fearless, and passionate coach. I've loved all their back and forth banter and welcomed Harbaugh's behavior. I was eagerly awaiting the awkward handshake afterwards, but as far as I could see it didn't happen. Did anyone else catch it?
Great game, great win. Before Jim Harbaugh moves on to a better job, the Stanford Cardinal will have a great deal of success.
Couple other comments:
- Tavita Pritchard, the Cardinal QB making his first start and delivering in the clutch was interview after the game. By the way, classy move by Jim Harbaugh to refuse an interview and make Versus focus in on the QB instead. Tavita said the win was for his dad who was unable to attend the game ... because he was at a wedding. You and me both were thinking illness, right? I sure hope it was Tavita's sister getting married, or maybe even his dad himself at the altar. Your son is starting in his first ever game at USC and you're not there because of a wedding?
- Versus announcers. Aw.Ful. I only caught the 4th quarter, but it was filled with numerous mistakes. Namely, saying USC had scored when Stanford tied the game at 23 in the final moments. Then, the analyst noted Jim Harbaugh was going for the tie by suggesting they kick the extra point which of course would eventually give Stanford the 1-point advantage. Nice work, guys.
