Jim Irsay, Colts' Owner, Arrested for DUI and Drug Possession
Initially, the report was of a drunk driving charge, but Irsay claims not to have had a drink in years, and those closest to him assert that is true.
The Colts front office has apparently been covering for Irsay for years. Just a few short months ago, Indy Star columnist, Bob Kravitz, asked Irsay about his weight loss, from 235 pounds to approximately 165. Irsay told him the weight loss was intentional, as doctors had advised him to lose weight to ease stress on his back and hip. Kravitz has tweeted that he was, and is, doubtful that is the case. Kravitz is convinced the weight loss is due to an addiction to prescription drugs.
Now, the news is confirmed that Irsay was found in possession of Schedule IV Controlled Substances. For years, according to Kravitz, the Colts' front office has been trying to encourage Irsay to seek treatment for his addiction, to no avail. They have additionally encouraged him to employ the services of a driver, at the very least, again to no avail.
Now it seems an intervention of sorts is in Irsay's future. The league will most certainly take action of some sort, and the Colts' front office is likely to insist on treatment.
At 54, Jim Irsay still has a long life ahead of him, yet he looks much older, and no doubt his body is showing the effects of his continued abuse. Here's hoping he takes treatment offered and gets back on track.
