Location and the university's commitment to building an upper echelon football program are two of the biggest factors for the South Florida Bulls success. But what's the most critical factor? Their coach is 100% insane.
Taking the leftovers around Florida is going to get you instant talent, quite a bit more than the second tier recruits in Big Sky country. However, these recruits don't just knock on the head coach's door and develop themselves into a national title contender overnight. Jim Leavitt's energy, enthusiasm and teaching is the biggest reason you'll be shaking your head yet again tonight when you see them at #2 next to South Florida. The guy is flat out nuts, and you have to love it.
Whether he's jumping on his players' beds to get them up and in the weight room or whether he's doing windsprints and bull rushes, the players have no choice but to match their 50-year-old coach's intensity. A task they fail at every day, but it's good enough to have one of the best teams in the country.
Seriously, wouldn't you want to play for Leavitt? It might not happen this season or the next, but I'll predict South Florida has a Top 3 recruiting class (if Rivals allows that to happen) in 3 years. That's why Nick Saban whined about South Florida's ability to take kids that can't qualify elsewhere. Not only was it a ridiculous statement, it was fueled by fear and for good reason. The Bulls aren't leaving the Top 10 any time soon. While I still think Florida is the best team in the state, USF will establish themselves as the second best very soon. Just think about how ridiculous that statement would have sounded 11 years ago.
