The elder Steinbrenner wanted Don Mattingly to manage, the younger Steinbrenners went with Joe Girardi. Good choice. If this new Yankee brass wants to be successful they should ask their father what he thinks, and make the opposite decision the rest of the way. Joe Girardi has reportedly been offered the Yankees managerial position and it's only a matter of time before the contract is settled and it's made official.
“The Yankees have expressed interest in Joe becoming manager,” Girardi’s agent, Steve Mandel, said in a telephone interview Monday. “We’ve decided to have discussions with them and we’re moving forward. No timetable has been set, but it’s a process we’re letting take place.”I do feel bad for Mattingly, who rightfully should be very frustrated by this process. He was begged out of retirement essentially to replace Torre when that day came, but now the landscape has changed. I'm sure he'd be a good coach, but it's obvious that Girardi has the potential to be a great coach and won't be fazed by the New York media. He took a team full of rookies and nearly directed the Marlins to the playoffs in 2006. You'd have to assume he can light a fire under the current lineup loaded with talent.
