I didn't bother watching any Sunday Night Baseball. Two New York teams plus Jon Miller and Joe Morgan was a little too much for me.
Fortunately, I didn't miss this classic Joe Morgan comment. In fact, we should go ahead and make this a weekly feature every Monday.
After Jose Reyes hit a home run, Morgan drooled over the replay with this praise:
"You know what I like about that, he ran around the bases. He hit it, and he proceeded to go around the bases."As Brian Powell points out, Reyes was obligated to do this:
According to Rule 6.09(d) of the Official Major League rule book....Now, of course, I understand what Morgan meant. He appreciated Reyes swiftness with with he completed his home run in relation to say, a Manny Ramirez stroll through the park.
(d) A fair ball passes over a fence or into the stands at a distance from home base of 250 feet or more. Such hit entitles the batter to a home run when he shall have touched all bases legally. A fair fly ball that passes out of the playing field at a point less than 250 feet from home base shall entitle the batter to advance to second base only;
But I think we all know that if Reyes played second base, Morgan would have found this offensive in some way, by showing up the rest of the league with his speed.
