Joe Paterno Received A 3 Year Contract Extension To Remain Penn State's Head Coach.
Joe Paterno Signs A Lifetime Contract Extension With Penn State. In Other Words, They Gave Him 3 More Years

Joe Paterno has reportedly signed a 3 year contract extension to remain the head coach at Penn State University. Coach Paterno will turn 82 years old on December 21, and next year will be his 43rd as the coach of the Nittany Lions.

Penn State will play USC in the Rose Bowl on January 1. They finished the season 11-1 and ranked 6th in the BCS poll. Their lone loss to Iowa on November 8 cost them a chance to play in the National Championship game, which would have given Paterno a chance to win his 3rd national championship.

Coach Paterno has had a little trouble lately, ever since this incident where he suffered an injury after getting hit by a player during a Penn State vs Wisconsin game last year. He has coached many games from the press box, due to several health issues.

This contract might be his last, since he has been rumored to be close to the end of his career for years now. The rumor is, however, that he is scared of retirement, since Bear Bryant died almost immediately after retiring, and some people presume that his job is what's keeping him alive.

With this extension, it looks like death just might be the only thing that could possibly keep Paterno out of action.

And remember... Joe Pa really wants you to come to Penn State (0:59):

I view it much differently than most here seem to... Paterno is the last of a (yes) dying breed. It's easy enough to take pot-shots at his hobbling around the sidelines. You can even jeer him for being less than astute at the microphone (which is not an altogether new development in his career). He's a lifelong football coach, not a PR genius.

But no one can criticize his record both on and off the field, or the tradition and legacy he leaves as his life's work. No matter what his age or how long he endures, no one can take this away from him - the reason he is the last of a dying breed is that he stands for character, integrity, and class. Rare attributes indeed in the sporting world in this day and age. Penn State, by granting this contract extension, pays homage to this man who has dedicated his life to the university and above all else, his players and fans. Contrary to the sentiment expressed here, I say that the University is to be applauded for their endorsement of this man's life and his contributions to the university, the game and sport in general. The problem is not that he's still around. The problem is that there are so few others waiting in the wings who are remotely qualified or capable of filling the void created by his eventual departure.

Penn State has chosen wisely, in my view. And by the way... they ARE 11-1 this year, in case that small detail has escaped the casual onlooker.

My $.02.

The only thing that would be sadder is if Ali got back into the ring.

Well now Bobby Bowden doesn't have to go look for a fourth member to complete his golfing foursome in the senior men's league on Tuesday morning's.  Next year's team will be the best ever with Joe Pa,Bobby and the recently returning Bill Snyder scoring the points alongside their team captain.

I love Joe P...I love Bobby B. Maybe they should do a geriatric battle of the armband plays, or earboxing or something. Sorry ya'll..I hope when I am 82 I have an inclination to move around and function..These men deserve the utmost repsect.. but I seriously wonder how much respect they can command considering the state of everyday values and and our youth. Don't get me wrong,,they are legends, but part of that is knowing when it's time to graze in greener pastures.

Heh, heh... It's been said that if you love what you do, you'll never "work" a day in your life. And I think that's probably true with people like Paterno. It's gotta' be tough to come to grips with the fact that you're reaching the end of a career... and your life, simultaneously.

Personally, I appreciate the fact that PSU is giving him the opportunity to go out on his terms... and (nearly) on top. I'm not a PSU devotee, but I genuinely respect Paterno who put them on the sporting map. And like Brian said - loyalty is a rare quality and in this case, it's been a two-way street. There's a lot to be said for and learned from that (occasional poopy-pants not withstanding).

They love this guy!  I have a good friend who's Dad was on the faculty at PSU and she has a good relationship with the AD there.  To hear her tell it, they love the guy and hope he doesn't retire.

Especially after watching what has happened in Michigan.

Bottom line is, like msamwise said, he's got unmatched integrity and a great legacy to go along.  Why push him out?

Even if he has a losing season the philosophy in Happy Valley is why trade sportsmanship, integrity, and tradition for a few wins...or worse.

Nothing is harder than reaching the immorality you thought you would never reach. Do not take my comments as derogatory ones, because they are not...if the old school could find a way to instill just a few of their values in the up and comers, we'd all be a bit better off. With that said...as hard as it is to relinquish the reins, if you pick your successor well, your glory will still abound!!!!!!!

This comes fom a Paterno, Bowden. Landry, Knignt, Holtz fan...( and I clarify tht I HATE FSU..I do love BB tho') LOL

Its got to be hard for recruits to come though.  The guy may never see their senior year.  I never said they should oust him either.  He has earned the right to leave whenever he feels like it.  It looks like its gonna take death to get him out.  But, He can do what he wants.  He friggin JoePa!
