It's clear that Joe Torre was fired yesterday, the Yankees just lacked the stones to admit that publicly. An organization that happily overpays every player on its roster could certainly afford to pay Joe Torre, who essentially guarantees postseason play, a few extra million.
That's what really frustrates me; George Steinbrenner all of a sudden wants to evaluate his people based on money. When I say Steinbrenner, I mean who ever is making the decisions now. Apparently $7 million a year wasn't enough for arguably the best manager in baseball, and isn't enough for 4 World Series titles and postseason play in every season as manager. That's perfectly fine if that's the Yankees stance with Joe, but now it's time to carry this over to the field. Is Jason Giambi worth $23 million? Is Farnsworth worth $5? It's really sad of all people, Joe is the one judged by money.
Credit Joe Torre for gracefully playing his part in the "firing," he deserved a better way to go out.
