I honestly thought Joe Torre was finished and content with building a home in Hawaii, who wouldn't be? Whether he's driven by the sour taste left from his Yankees departure or a longtime desire to manage the Dodgers, I love the move. Although Torre said last night on David Letterman that there's nothing to these rumors, nearly everyone close to the situation is reporting the deal is almost done.
Grady Little must hate Joe Torre."The Los Angeles Dodgers have decided to fire manager Grady Little and replace him with former Yankees manager Joe Torre, The Journal News has learned.
Torre, 67, could be named manager as soon as tomorrow, according to two sources close to the situation. Don Mattingly is expected to accompany Torre to Los Angeles as his bench coach. Torre is also interested in hiring Kevin Long, his hitting coach with the Yankees.
The Dodgers were 82-80 this season under Little and were beset by clubhouse unrest. Owner Frank McCourt, a Boston native, decided Torre is best suited to quell that situation."
Could this mean the Dodgers become a player in the Alex Rodriguez sweepstakes? We won't know that answer for a while, but what we will know as soon as Joe Torre signs this deal -- Los Angeles is now a major player in the National League.
